On a summer day in late 19th century Russia, a group of bourgeois friends and acquaintances gather at a dilapidated country estate.

«Rerberg and Tarkovsky. The Reverse Side of «Stalker» is part of the documentary sequence «Rerberg», which tells the dramatic story of life and work of one of the most striking national cameraman, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Georgi Ivanovich Rerberg. In the first 10 years of his work in cinema he shot his best movies: «The First Teacher», «The Story of Asia Kliachina», «The Nobility Nest» with the director Andrei Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky and also «Mirror» with Andrei Tarkovsky, without whom it is impossible to imagine the story of world cinema. Rerberg the cameraman was the last in the family of Russian painters, architects and musicians Rerbergs, whose destinies throughout different generations reflected the crisis of human relations in a totalitarian state. This crisis had an especially striking and devastating effect on G.Rerberg himself, when during the shooting of «Stalker» the director Andrei Tarkovsky provoked a «spiritual Chernobyl» against him and other members of the crew. Rerberg’s death severed the link to the true story of the creation of «Stalker», the story which became a legend and concerning which he never made any public statements, although certain existing versions of these events affected his honor, dignity, professionalism and seriously influenced his career. This is a private story, reflecting the future catastrophe of our society. It could become a warning to people, but the documentary facts have been collected only now in this movie.

Director Nikita Mikhalkov documents the history of Russia from 1980 to 1991 by annually asking his daughter Anna such questions as "What do you love the most?", "What scares you the most?", "What do you want above anything" and "What do you hate the most?"

A farmer and his wife live in a rural part of Inner Mongolia with their three children. Chinese population control policies prevent them from having any more. The farmer sets out for the nearest town to obtain birth control. He comes upon a Russian truck driver who has ended up in a lake. The farmer takes the man back to his farm, and after initially being appalled, the Russian becomes enchanted with the peaceful life of the countryside and decides to stay. But his presence presages big changes for the peasants.

On a stopover in Moscow, a young writer Volodya makes friends with Kolya, who is returning home from a hard night shift. Just as Kolya is about to take a rest, he is met by his old friend Sasha, who wants help getting a deferral from military service so that he can get married.

Провинция. Детский театр в небольшом городке. Пожилые и не очень трезвые актеры целыми днями играют: свиней, белок, козлов. Вторая половина труппы уехала на заработки на сельские гастроли, под присмотром непьющего администратора. Актер Аркадий, которому уже за 40, последние годы играет в театре только одну роль — Зайца. Он разошелся с женой и теперь живет в гримерке театра. Понимая, что кроме Зайца, он ничего уже больше не сыграет (а душа требует творчества), Аркадий начинает во время спектакля вставлять в свой текст цитаты из Шекспира.
За что получает выговоры от директора Ароныча, а затем и последнее предупреждение. Актеры его не поддерживают — им давно уже ничего не надо. Единственный человек, который восхищается Аркадием — молоденькая актриса, играющая роль Гриба без слов. Тем временем актеры на сельских гастролях спаивают администратора, что приводит к постоянным комичным ситуациям. Но вот у театра появляется свой спонсор — владелец колбасных цехов, который обещает деньги на новый спектакль.
Неожиданно для Аркадия, спонсор дает ему в новом спектакле главную роль. Заяц находится на вершине счастья. Но мнение людей, наделенных властью, часто меняется. Сможет ли Аркадий сохранить самоуважение, свою любовь и даже жизнь — зависит от него…
