The 17-year-old Tom filled out a questionnaire for the Employment Agency at a vocational guidance office in his school. He falls in love with the trainee, which distributed the questionnaires. In the evaluation he gets out a job as an apprentice at a funeral home as a funeral professional.

Memories of the death of Richard, his childhood sweetheart, still haunt the war veteran Leonard to this day. Over the years, Leonard turns to alcohol to escape his pain and grief. Only his new friend Arthur manages, for a brief moment, to pull Leonard—who is inexplicably broken—out of his slump. A relapse into drinking, followed by a resulting argument with Arthur, ultimately drives Leonard to confront his demons.
