Balance Sheet Recession: Japan's Struggle with Uncharted Economics and its Global Implications [Book] Goodreads
publishing house: Wiley 2003 - 10
In this groundbreaking book, leading international economist, Richard Koo argues that far from being the sick man of Asia, Japan is suffering from a temporary but highly unusual economic aberration. Economists and business commentators have always assumed that the majority of companies in any economy are forward looking and are trying to maximize profits. They never considered the possibility that a vast majority of companies may be placing their highest priorities on minimizing debt in order to repair their balance sheets. But that remote possibility has been the reality in Japan for the past decade, and more recently in many other countries including at least a part of the US. Balance Sheet Recession argues that contrary to popular belief, it is this massive shift in corporate behavior, instead of structural problems, that is the root cause of both the deflation and the non-performing loan problems that have troubled Japan for so long. It argues that when the causality runs from the corporate balance sheet problems to deflation and banking problems, a highly unconventional policy response is needed to stabilize the economy. After all, the last time anything similar has happened was the 1930s in the US. Richard Koo's experience in dealing with both the US banking crisis of the early 1980s and the Japanese balance sheet and banking problems of the last ten years makes him unique qualified to comment on this situation. He clearly explains how such a recession can happen in any economy following an asset price bubble, and how best to deal with it.

Human Geography: Culture, Society, and Space [Book] Douban
author: H. J. de Blij / Alexander B. Murphy publishing house: Wiley 2003
Beautifully written by two of the foremost geographers in the discipline, Human Geography, Seventh Edition, helps students and instructors explore and untangle the many complicated threads of world issues of today and tomorrow--at a time when global changes in politics, agriculture, and environmental issues are visibly affecting all people.
In the Seventh Edition, the authors have added entirely new coverage on a variety of topics of considerable contemporary importance, for example: declining fertility rates, religious fundamentalism, genetically modified food, and economic impacts on political power as well as increased coverage of cultural change in the face of globalization. A new chapter, "Human Society and Natural Environments," addresses human/environmental interactions and addresses how humans cope with environmental changes such as global warming.
Human Geography: Culture, Society and Space challenges students by presenting information in a manner that adds perspective and engages students in inquiry-based thinking and learning. The text now includes a "Looking Ahead" box in each chapter that challenges students to figure out what human-geographical trends are now developing, and what the next global questions they may be confronting in their lifetimes will be. For instance: what role will organic agriculture play in food production generally? How will municipalities around the world ensure that the new megacities (of over 10 million inhabitants each, not a single one of them in Europe) don't descend into a chaos of serviceless squalor? And what will be the effects of more and more religious intermixing, that is, people of different faiths commingling much more, almost everywhere, than before?

The Laws of Trading: A Trader's Guide to Better Decision-Making for Everyone [Book] Douban Goodreads
author: Agustin Lebron publishing house: Wiley 2019 - 6
Every decision is a trade. Learn to think about the ones you should do — and the ones you shouldn’t.
Trading books generally break down into two categories: the ones which claim to teach you how to make money trading, and the memoir-style books recounting scandals and bad behavior. But the former don't have profitable trades to teach; if they did they'd keep those trades to themselves. And the latter are frequently entertaining, but they don't leave you with much you can apply in your own life. The Laws of Trading is different.
All of our relationships and decisions involve trading at some level. This is a book about decision-making through the lens of a professional prop trader. For years, behavioral and cognitive scientists have shown us how human decision-making is flawed and biased. But how do you learn to avoid these problems in day-to-day decisions where you have to react in real-time? What are the important things to think about and to act on? The world needs a book by a prop trader who has lived, breathed and taught trading for a living, drawing upon years of insights on the trading floor in real markets, good and bad, whether going sideways, crashing, or bubbling over. If you can master the decision-making skills needed to profitably trade in modern markets, you can master decision-making in all walks of life. This book will teach you exactly those skills.
Introduces, develops, and applies one law per chapter, making it easy not only to remember useful concepts, but also to have them at the ready in any situation.
Shows you how to find and think about the “special edge” of your organization, and yourself.
Teaches you how to handle the interaction of people with artificially intelligent (AI) machines that make decisions, a skill that is rapidly becoming essential in the AI-driven economy of the future.
Includes a "bonus" digital ancillary, an Excel spreadsheet with various worked examples that expand on the scenarios described in the book.
Do you need to make rational decisions in a competitive environment? Almost everyone does. This book will teach you the tools that let you do your job better.
