一部纪录片。
每天，成百上千封信件从美国甚至世界各地寄到约翰·马尔科维奇先生位于洛杉矶的工作室Mr. Mudd。这些信件都十分厚实，里面装着沉甸甸的手稿、打印稿或复印稿，它们的作者怀揣梦想，写一个又一个故事，然后把这些故事一股脑扔到马尔科维奇先生的工作室里，期待着一夜之间它们被搬上银幕。整个纪录片围绕着四个作者投递稿件的过程展开。
纪录片的制作者来到洛杉矶Mr. Mudd工作室，对马尔科维奇和他的同事进行采访，他们对于大量的投稿式信件表达了无奈。工作室的一名负责人说，我们只是把制作电影当做职业来干，没想更多别的事。纪录片制作者见到了那四份稿件，并请马尔科维奇一一看过。有一个剧本给了他不错的印象。影片的最后，在制作者的建议下，马尔科维奇在自己的摄影棚里给这四个故事的作者每人录制了一盘录像带，录像带的内容是马尔科维奇做主角的角色朗读。
片中马尔科维奇曾颇有些无奈地说道：”我们的办公室在好莱坞，但实际上我们差不多是局外人。你知道，我不是汤姆汉克斯，不是汤姆克鲁斯，不是丹泽尔华盛顿，不是梅尔吉布森，我不是他们中的任何一个。我意思是，上帝保佑他们，但我不是。因此我喜欢什么、我说什么好或怎么样，也许事实上好莱坞认为恰恰相反。“ 相信他是在委婉表示自己和好莱坞的格格不入。
一个很有意思的纪录片，让我们看到了圈外人的梦想和圈内人的艰辛。顺便说一句，马尔科维奇居然同意在最后来个不厌其烦的角色扮演，令人感到有些神奇，他看起来像个挺有耐心的家伙，而不像是个脾气不好的人。
