艺术史研究生露西（西尔薇·泰斯图德 Sylvie Testud 饰）被法国十八世纪“雅宴画家”华托的画作所深深吸引，她坚信在画作中一定隐藏着不为人知的惊世秘密。华托的画作中常常出现神秘的女子背影，露西对此产生了浓厚的兴趣，为此展开了一连串对华托生平的研究。
在左岸咖啡馆，露西邂逅了神秘的青年艺术家文森特（詹姆斯·提瑞 James Thiérrée 饰），两人一见钟情。在文森的协助下，露西发现了藏在巴黎某育幼院的不知名画作“丑角吉尔”。露西的指导教授杜萨（让-皮埃尔·马里埃尔 Jean-Pierre Marielle 饰）却百般阻挠露西的研究，杜萨因为痴迷对华托画作的研究而痛失爱人，他害怕露西跟自己一样踏上被诅咒的命运。然而执着的露西还是典当了父亲遗留下的古董，标得华托所绘的这幅名画，却不曾发觉隐匿在名画背后的爱情魔咒已降临在她与文森特之间。
