Linda is a headstrong woman. She marries and lives with her husband Paul in the Ruhr area. But 12 years of marriage do not make Linda happy. She dreams of seeing the sea and is constantly in search of fulfillment. Her husband doesn't understand her. Instead, he goes his own way. They have three children together, but Linda continues to live in her own world. A few days before her dream of the sea comes true, Linda dies in an accident at a freight station.

14-year-old Siddharta, wise beyond his age, has to deal every day with his heroin-addict mother Silvia and an absent father. One day, his four-year-old sister Domitilla accidentally pricks her finger on one of Silvia's used needles without her noticing. Seeking advice on the Internet, Siddharta is told to have her tested for hepatitis and AIDS. Thus he embarks on a odyssey of medical bureaucracy and both kind and uncaring adults.

After the 8th September 1943 north of Italy is occupied by Germans. Italian army collapsed and the soldiers are escaped to the mountains trying to set up a resistance. Many civilians did the same and Johnny, an English literature student, is among them. Johnny avoids to band together the red partisans (communists) and tries to be part of the azure bands (former regular soldiers). But in both cases he is deluded by the partisan bands and discovers that the partisan war is less poetic and genuine that he thought. At one point anyway the partisans free Alba from Germans. When the city falls again in German hands Johnny escape with Ettore and Pierre. But, one after another, German army and Italian fascists captures the partisans and Johnny will pass the winter alone and isolated. He then finds the way to participate to one of the last attack to occupants, in fact the war will be over two months later.

“Nobody and no place is real forever”, wrote Goliarda Sapienza in Le certezze del dubbio. The story sees a writer ending up in prison following a crazy and unexpected act. While incarcerated, she meets a few young prisoners which leads to a kind of rebirth. Following her release, during a torrid Roman summer where time seems to stand still, the writer continues to meet up with the women she’d forged close relationships with and who have also been set free. A profound relationship begins which has a decisive effect on her life; a genuine bond which no-one on the outside could ever understand. This writer is Goliarda Sapienza, and this is her story, as she herself told it.
