聪慧善良的摘星在狼狩山上结识一名野少年，给他取名狼仔。狼仔自小生长在山林间，虽未经教化但天性质朴，心地纯善，与摘星青梅竹马。不料不谙世事的狼仔为救幼狼，竟被误会成谋害重臣的凶手，惨遭追杀。尽管摘星查出真凶，还狼仔清白，却因其兄马俊从中作梗，使得狼仔误以为摘星出卖自己，狼仔伤心坠崖，消失无踪。途经此地的炀王楚馗见狼仔天资不凡，暗中将他收为养子，而后又封他为渤王和夜煞之首。
八年后，经历马家惨案的摘星与渤王意外重逢，摘星怀疑渤王就是狼仔，但渤王矢口否认，因为他不愿面对痛苦的过去。楚馗为了利用马摘星和马家军去对付溍国，赐婚于渤王和摘星，甚至让摘星误以为她的杀父仇人是溍王。摘星被楚馗误导，答应嫁给渤王。
在两人相处的日子里，摘星的温柔一步步唤醒渤王的本性与爱意，渤王因摘星的聪慧与勇敢而心动，摘星也发现渤王虽身居高位，仍保有天性中的善良和正义。当渤王查出八年前追杀的真相，得知摘星从未背弃过他时，一直压抑的爱意冲破了伪装，渤王终于承认自己就是狼仔，和摘星在狼狩山上解开误会，一吻定情。
最终，历经重重磨难和考验，摘星在正义之士疾冲和宝娜的帮助下，查出马家惨案的主谋，正是楚馗，遂众人齐心，推翻炀国的暴政。然而，摘星在退敌时身负重伤，一缕香魂逝去。渤王没有选择独活，也选择随她而去。
