亜矢子は夫重隆との愛なき結婚にすっかりつかれ果てていた。外国に赴任している夫の留守を、視力を失った母堂總子と暮らしていた。そうした美貌の人妻亜矢子に、新進のカメラマン奈津井は憧れを持っていた。だが、彼女のすすめるままに千佳子と簡単な見合結婚をしてしまった。千佳子は亜矢子の夫重隆に誘惑されて、短かい愛の交渉をもった暗い過去があった。この結婚にはこういった暗い影があった。亜矢子は、夫の留守中に知り合った大新聞の事業部の次長久世が、心のよりどころとなりそれが愛にかわっていた。久世は、画期的な企画に敏腕をふるって業界にその名を知られていたし、若い芸術家達に絶大な信頼があった。しかし、彼もまた亜矢子と同じように、愛なき結婚で結ばれた名前だけの妻と別居した生活を送っていた。そんなところへ、重隆が突然帰国してきた。この帰国は複雑な人間関係に大きな波紋を投げかけた。この帰国を知った千佳子は、荒廃した自分の中に真実の愛を確かめようとして重隆を訪れた。しかし、彼はただ千佳子の身体を求めるだけだった。彼女は現在の生活までも捨てようとした自分の愚かさを知って、奈津井のアパートから姿を消した。一方、久世の妻英子は夫と亜矢子の仲にしっと心をもやし、帰国早々の重隆に中傷した。重隆は亜矢子との離婚を認めず、最後まで彼女を苦しめようと図った。そんな時、重隆は密輸であげられた。亜矢子はこれで夫とは絶対別れられないと決心し、久世を川治温泉に誘って一夜を過ごした。そうした亜矢子の心を知って久世は、みずから進んで、佐渡の支局へ転勤した。そんな頃、荒んだ生活の奈津井のもとに千佳子が帰ってきた。若い二人はお互の愛の傷を見詰め合うことによって、新しい愛の生活に出発しようとする勇気と意志を持ったのだ。一方、英子は東京から佐渡へ渡る気になれず、自分から久世に別れを告げた。そして、獄窓の重隆も亜矢子との離婚に心から同意するようになっていた。亜矢子と久世の結ばれる日は、もう間近なのだ。
