1969年之后，月球表面再没有留下人类的足迹。可身担演员、导演、制片人数职的汤姆·汉克斯却反复“造访”那颗荒凉的星球：先是主演了1995年的电影《阿波罗13号》，而后又自编自演了1998年的电视系列剧《从地球到月球》，而在这部最新的作品当中，汉克斯不但参与撰写了这部70分钟长的大银幕奇观电影的剧本，还亲自担任旁白，企图通过这部3D影片来颠覆以往传统电影给观众带来的登月感受。汉克斯表示：“登月从情感上、智力上和精神上都对我们影响深远。我希望制造出人们内心的感觉。”
