从小顽皮乖张的小豆豆黑柳彻子（满岛光 饰），即使长大后也搞不清究竟想做些什么。因为受了木偶剧的影响，她决定成为一个会讲故事的人，于是便参加了NHK的招聘。20世纪50年代，电视开始走入日本社会。如同一张白纸的小豆豆最终被幸运之神眷顾，成为了NHK的一名员工。起初她格格不入，仿佛那里都不需要她，好在她那独特的声音终于邂逅了合适的角色，令彻子的脸上再展笑颜。不久他们迎来了电视的黄金年代，工作中彻子结识了渥美清（中村狮童 饰）、坂本久（锦户亮 饰）、向田邦子（米姆拉 饰）、泽村贞子（岸本加世子 饰）、森繁久弥（吉田钢太郎 饰）等在日本影视界留下重要印记的人物，懵懵懂懂的小豆豆也渐渐找到了人生的方向……
本片根据日本著名主持人黑柳彻子的人生经历改编，主要参考了黑柳的著作《小豆豆频道》。

Kouta Fujioka is a 29-year old man who has a good family, including his father who always supports him, his mother who enjoys cooking, and his older sister with her bright personality. He also has a girlfriend named Etsuko Tanebe. Kouta wants people to eat delicious foods made by him and begins a job as an apprentice chef at a restaurant. One day, Kouta suddenly passes out and is sent to the hospital, where he is diagnosed with malignant lymphoma, completely changing his life. Given three months left to live, Kouta makes up his mind, with the support of his family and those he meets at the hospital, to accept his fate and "face a proper death".

Takeshi Kitano plays a version of himself in which he's a struggling director cycling through a number of different genres in an effort to complete his latest project.

One of the hottest selling tickets in town is to see the hugely popular “rakugoka”, or comic storyteller, Danshun. Danshun himself was inspired as a little boy to become a rakugoka after seeing the legendary Danshi. He had found his calling. After his resistant parents relented to their son’s pleas, Danshun at age 17 became an apprentice of Danshi, the man dubbed a “wunderkind” and “genius” of the rakugo world. He soon realized however how hard the training was, and embarked upon a rigorous existence in which he had to deliver newspapers to earn a living. Living with hardship and joys, Danshun and his fellow apprentices would eventually rise in the rakugo world. A resplendent cast comes together to depict the rough and tumble world of a man who loved rakugo above all else and was destined to fulfill a dream.
