本部纪录片是BBC地平线系列推出的一档讲述开创现代科学新纪元的伟大科学家、物理学家阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦与他那著名质能关系等式：“E=MC^2”的纪录片。本片再现了这个打开原子时代大门的生死方程式，是如何永久的改变了历史以及爱因斯坦的一生。
1939年第二次世界大战前夕，阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦给美国总统富兰克林·罗斯福写了封信，这封信是关于爱因斯坦最著名方程式“E=MC^2”的应用。他所担心的就是纳粹会利用它来建造原子弹。然而他所担心的事情还是发生了，他的这封信引发了一连串导致了广岛和长崎被摧毁的事件。爱因斯坦后来说道：写这封信是他一生中的一个错误。
