टेलीविजन शो बहादुर शाह जफर 1986 में दूरदर्शन पर प्रसारित हुआ। अशोक कुमार ने इसमें मुख्य भूमिका निभाई।
बी.आर. चोपड़ा और रवि चोपड़ा ने इस धारावाहिक का निर्देशन किया था। इस सीरियल में बहादुर शाह जफर के किरदार में अशोक कुमार की एक्टिंग को काफी सराहना मिली थी। संगीत राज कमल द्वारा रचित था और आवाज महेंद्र कपूर, 'कविता कृष्णमूर्ति' और 'अनुराधा पौडवाल' ने दी थी।
डॉ. राही मासूम रज़ा सीरियल के संवाद लेखक थे। कलाकारों में शम्मी कपूर, जूही चावला, राज बब्बर जैसे अभिनेता भी शामिल थे। सीरीज में अशोक कुमार ने शानदार परफॉर्मेंस दी. उन्होंने जफर के जीवन की पीड़ा को दिखाया और दिखाया कि कैसे वह अंततः ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी पर बहुत अधिक निर्भर हो गया था। बहुत ताकतवर शासक न होने के बावजूद अशोक कुमार ने जफर के गजलों और कविताओं के प्रति प्रेम को बखूबी निभाया था. गौरतलब है कि बहादुर शाह जफर आखिरी मुगल बादशाह थे।
इस सम्राट ने ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी को दिल्ली से कर वसूलने और उसमें सैन्य बल बनाए रखने की अनुमति दी। जफर को कभी भी राजकाज में रुचि नहीं थी या उनकी कोई राजनीतिक महत्वाकांक्षा नहीं थी। 1857 के इंडियाना विद्रोह के बाद अंग्रेजों ने उन्हें दिल्ली से निर्वासित कर दिया। वह एक प्रसिद्ध उर्दू शायर थे, जिन्होंने कुछ ग़ज़लें लिखी थीं। सीरीज में एक्टर राज बब्बर ने अकबर का किरदार निभाया था. इसका प्रसारण साल 1986 में किया गया था.

With the passing away of Rajesh's parents, Jagatram undertakes to look after him. He hopes that some day Rajesh will marry his daughter Rekha. He arranges Rajesh's employment with a local hostel, which Rajesh accepts. After being employed, Rajesh finds that his male students are distracted and unable to concentrate on their studies. He decides to investigate further, and finds out that they visit a prostitute named Chandni regularly. He puts a stop to this. And then Jagatram finds out that Rajesh has been frequenting Chandni's place almost every night, under the unbelievable pretext of teaching her to read and write.
