甚内たま子が勤める大日東保険損害調査部の部長・勝田は、高校時代の同窓会に参加するため、同級生の吉岡と伊豆の温泉地へと向かっていた。
蕎麦屋を営む吉岡は、商売でも使用しているワゴン車に蕎麦打ち道具一式を持ち込み、勝田を助手席に乗せて運転をしていた。吉岡の店の写真を見ようと、助手席に座っている勝田が吉岡の携帯をいじっていると、急ブレーキがかかる。高速道路の第3車線を走っていた白い乗用車が、中央分離帯にぶつかり急停止した。そして、その車体後部に吉岡が車で衝突してしまったのだ。
勝田はかすり傷で済んだものの、吉岡の意識が戻らない。白い車の運転手・北村は即死。どうやら警察は、勝田たちの乗った車がムリな追い越しをしようとスピードを出し過ぎて、前方不注意で前の車にぶつかったと見ているようだ。つまり、吉岡が加害者ということになっていた。
このままでは、事故の全額損害賠償を吉岡が払うことになってしまう。勝田は、そんなのデタラメで、悪いのは「白い車とぶつかった赤いスポーツカーだ！」と言い、赤いスポーツカーを捕まえることを宣言する。

俳優・佐々木蔵之介が2時間ドラマの主役に初挑戦した『塔馬教授の天才推理（1）　隠岐島の黄金伝説殺人事件』がフジテレビ系で6月1日（金）に放送される。小説家・高橋克彦氏の『南朝迷路』（文春文庫）が原作で、佐々木が演じるのは近世庶民文化史が専門の大学教授で浮世絵研究家でもある塔馬双太郎。「人より先を読める眼を持っているのですが、鋭いようには見えず、ふわっとして何を考えているのかわからないような雰囲気を醸し出すように演じました」と、2時間ドラマの“新ヒーロー”を作り上げた。
シリーズ第1弾となる『隠岐島の黄金伝説殺人事件』では、後醍醐天皇が流罪となった隠岐島に隠された幻の貨幣「乾坤通宝」を巡る黄金伝説にまつわる怪事件や、後醍醐天皇ゆかりの地・青森県黒石市大川原の火祭りの最中に遺体が見つかった男性の殺人事件の解明に塔馬教授が奮闘する。
