Wanting a lavish production to mark the 25th anniversary of UFA, the German film studio, Joseph Goebbels, director of the Nazi propaganda machine, commissioned an adaptation of Baron von Münchhausen‘s “autobiographical” stories. Baron von Münchhausen (1720-97) was an eccentric figure in European history, whose tall tales about his adventures rival anything to be found in the legends of Paul Bunyan or classic figures like Odysseus. This film recounts some of the episodes from the Baron’s sensational stories, which are set in the world of the 18th century.

The Venetian merchant Antonio is in a difficult financial situation. To help his friend Bassanio, who is campaigning for the heiress Portia, he goes, although in mutual disgust, to the Jewish money lender Shylock to borrow money from him. If Antonio can not repay the debt Shylock is allowed to cut a pound of meat out of Antonio's body. That is the deal.

Vera Meiners once was a doctor in a Swiss clinic. She was married to Jan and had a little girl, Brigitte. Her life was sweet. Unfortunately for her, it was not to last. Things started to change when Jan surprised her in the company of her ex lover. Believing she was cheating on him, which was wrong, Jan left his wife. Later on, Vera decided to operate on a child without referring to the head doctor and was fired for that. Obliged to cater for the needs of Brigitte, she was forced to change countries, forced to change her life...
