贫穷的老夫妇（三船敏郎 & 若尾文子 饰）老来丧女。某日一团火球落在竹林中，老翁在女儿坟旁发现一枚金蛋，金蛋中走出一名女孩。老夫妇欣喜非常，用亡女之名加耶为其命名，收养为女。夫妇俩更因这枚金蛋一夜暴富。
长大后的加耶（泽口靖子 饰）风华绝代，贵族子弟纷纷前来求婚。加耶对偶然邂逅的大纳言（中井贵一 饰）情有独钟。为表诚心，求婚者需找来三件宝物作为聘礼，分别是：蓬莱宝树、火鼠皮衣和龙颈上的宝石。另两位贵族因作弊被取消资格，而大纳言却空手而归，险些丧命。
大纳言的勇敢深深打动加耶，这时来自月亮上的生物却要将加耶接回故土……
