"Omaggio a Roma" is a 21-min documentary film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, initially released on October 16, 2009, made in collaboration with the municipality of Rome and the Italian Ministry for Tourism. It was presented at the Rome Film Festival, with a shorter 3-minute version to be broadcast on major stations in the world.

Catania, Sicilia 1854. A serious epidemic of cholera is hitting the region. Maria a 16 years old novice leaves her convent and returns her home to avoid contamination. Here she finds a difficult situation, in fact her stepmother and her half-sisters prevent Maria to live the normal life of a teenager. In his delirium from his return from war, Francesco Bernardone goes back in his memories to the days when he lived for parties and carnal pleasures. He slowly recovers, but after the illness he is no longer the Francesco that everybody knew. Instead of spending hours in taverns, he meditates on the beauty of God's creatures, soon renouncing his riches and his family with plans to rebuild an abandoned church and his life.
