A humble and simple Takezo abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

本片是第55届戛纳电影节的特别招待作品。从60年代开始就不断出产话题作品的吉田导演时隔14年重执导筒，在经过长达8年的制作后，推出了这部以广岛核爆炸为主题的作品。吉田认为自己“没有再现原子弹爆炸场面的资格，但有权描绘因核爆而死去的人的故事”，因为他的母亲就是核爆炸的受害者。导演选择了以女性的视角来切入这个主题，以让人预料不到的开端淡淡地展开故事，但是这样一来显得过于迂回，虽然亲情和女性的力量十分感人，也导致预定的主题显得并不鲜明。同时，影片画面优美却被指责冗长沉闷。从总体来说，这一部是具有特色的亲情战争主题片。
