助六(真田广之 饰)五岁的时候，父亲离家出走，抛弃了年幼的助六和他的母亲他从来不知道自己的父亲长啥样，从小就过著寄人篱下的生活，在上州片田家长大，母亲死後，助六打算到外面闯世界，他的第一站是江户，但在哪里他每天过的是游手好闲的日子，一次，他糊里糊涂的卷入一场是非，莫名其妙的为人报仇，正在丈二和尚摸不著脑袋时候，有人向他问好，有人向他鞠躬，还有人给他钱，他好像成了一个英雄，天生孤独的助六何时有这种待遇阿??他有点受宠若惊，从此无法忘了这种快感，帮别人报仇上了瘾，就这样，他开始到处流浪，四处为人报仇，一晃就过了七年。
经过七年的放浪生活，助六赚了15两的黄金，他身心疲惫，但还想著回家为母亲建一个像样的坟墓，回到阔别的家乡，的确有种亲切的感觉，但助六总觉得这里气氛怪怪的，似乎整个村子都垄罩在一种神秘兮兮的空气中，真是天意弄人，一直在为了报仇的助六，又卷入自己生父寻仇的队伍，在村子里，他遇上从小一起长大的太郎(村田雄浩 饰)，现在太郎已经是驿站官员，他告诉助六村子里将要进行一场复仇行动，对方是七年前杀了同僚的元八州官吏片仓梅太郎(仲代达矢 饰)，听到这事，助六一下精神就来了，马上向太郎申请加入，太郎爽快答应，助六趁闲又去了趟母亲的墓地，在哪里不知是谁摆了一圈菊花，让助六有点那闷。
从墓地一回到村子，太郎就找上助六到小酒馆走走，事先约好的另几个复仇者已在那边等待，经过一番仔细的筹画，就匆匆的散去，助六有点心神恍惚，让他难以平静的是站在酒馆二楼默默注视自己的那个女人，他知道是太郎的妹妹仙(玲木京香 饰)，走到小时後常玩的那间棺材店，助六遇到他的父亲片仓，片仓劝告助六，可是助六只觉得这个人好像以前见过，却没多加理会，棺材店的老爷爷好像知道隐情，但这时候关东八州的治安官神原识部(岸部一德 饰)来了，片仓悄悄的放了一团菊花在预先为自己做好的棺材里，然後慢慢的躺了去……。
