東京、山の手の代々木上原あたり。坂西家はその住宅街にある。一家には、六〇歳になる母親あきを中心に、会社では部長の長男勇一郎と妻の和子、その子の義郎、それにブドウ酒会社に勤める末娘の春子が住んでいる。また商家に嫁に行った長女の早苗が、夫、姑との仲がうまくいかず遊びに来ていた。早苗はこの里帰り中事故で夫に死なれ、毎月五千円の生活費を入れて実家に住みつくことになった。勇一郎は、家を抵当にした金で町工場をやっている和子の叔父に融資し、その利息を生活の足しにしていた。更に五十万円を申しこまれ、その金の用立てを早苗に頼んだ。彼女は承諾した。ある日、早苗、春子に、次男の礼二と妻の美枝らは甲府のブドウ園に遊んだ。案内は醸造技師の黒木、彼は早苗に好意以上のものを感じた。東京へ戻って、早苗は母の還暦祝の品物を買いに銀座へ出た。学友の菊に誘われて入ったフルーツパーラーで、彼女の知り合いという五条に紹介された。身だしなみのいい中年の紳士だった。還暦祝いの日、黒木から早苗に電話があった。二人は上野の美術館に行った。帰り、黒木は早苗に接吻した。勇一郎は金を貸した鉄本が行方をくらましたのを知り、青くなった。坂西家は家族会議を開いた。母親にも内証で家を抵当に入れた勇一郎は弟妹に責められた。礼二も春子も分配金が貰えないので、老後の母を誰が面倒をみるかという話にまで進んだ。早苗はズバズバいう弟妹たちが悲しかった。彼女はあきに、母を引きとっても結婚したいと申しこんできた五条の許へ再婚する気持を打ちあけた。早苗は黒木を呼びだし、別れた。しかしあきは養老院へ入院手続きをしていた。郵便箱に「緑ケ丘老人ホーム」の封書を見た和子は、それをポケットにしまった。家族会議の夜に勇一郎に言った「あなたのお母さんだとばかり思っていたから、心の中にわだかまりがあったのよ、赤の他人だと思えばかえってうまくやっていけるんじやないかしら」という言葉を、和子は再びかみしめるのだった。

Otsuta is running the geisha house Tsuta in Tokyo. Her business is heavily in debt. Her daughter Katsuyo doesn't see any future in her mother's trade in the late days of Geisha. But Otsuta will not give up. This film portraits the day time life of geisha when not entertaining customers.
