文化大革命席卷中华大地，一切反动派和牛鬼蛇神都被打倒。张天师后人张十一（郑则仕 饰）也不能幸免，受到了亲生儿子为首革命小将的冲击。他家有一口祖传埕子，相传500年前张天师的一名徒弟为非作歹，天师派出另一名徒弟将恶徒收入埕中。张十一抵死保护坛子，危难时刻将埕子抛入大海。未过多久，香港议院祁大川（冯淬帆 饰）在慈善拍卖会上买到这口埕子，祁的女友Mable找来旧相好——坑蒙拐骗的江湖术士陈百通（陈百祥 饰）测吉凶，谁知陈却阴差阳错揭开了里面的封印。夜幕降临，当祁的儿子天佑（张学友 饰）正吓唬女友阿Cat时，埕中恶鬼突然现身。人吓人、鬼吓人、人吓鬼，惊恐异常。不久，猛鬼附体，为乱香江。
