金持ちの老人の財産を狙う内妻とその娘が、周囲の男たちを巻き込み、殺人の機会を狙う。人間の欲望を痛烈にえぐる渋谷らしいサスペンス・コメディ。

木下惠介の妹である楠田芳子のオリジナル脚本を松山善三が潤色し、小林正樹が監督した小市民映画。川崎で酒屋を営むある一家を題材に、妹と姑、戦災で足が不自由になった義妹らの確執と和解を描く。いずれも名優ぞろいの出演者たちがそれぞれ好演、貧しくても懸命に生きる庶民の生活がいきいきと描き出される。

原作は谷崎潤一郎の同名の小説で、谷崎自身が経験した三角関係の恋愛事件がモチーフにされている。監督は前年「夫婦善哉」で名匠の名を確立した豊田四郎。主役にその「夫婦善哉」で絶妙な演技を示した森繁久彌を再び起用している。庄造の生活は愛猫リリーを中心に動いているといっていいほどで、異常なまでの愛情をリリーに注いでいる。母親は庄造の前妻を追い出したが、今また叔父が彼の娘を庄造にと縁談を持ちかけてくるや、その持参金に目をつけて早くも承知する。しかし当の庄造は新妻がリリーを追い出して以来、色や金などそっちのけで、リリーのことが気が気でならない。甲斐性なしの男をめぐって母、先妻、後妻が欲や嫉妬に絡んで凄烈なやりとりを繰り広げる人間喜劇である。

Returning to their lord's castle, samurai warriors Washizu and Miki are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit's prophecy comes true, Washizu's scheming wife, Asaji, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit's prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Director Akira Kurosawa's resetting of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.
