《中国经济专题》总结了中国和其他国家、地区经济发展和改革成功与失败的经验，提出了一个经济发展和转型的一般理论，并以此理论分析了中国在改革和发展过程中所取得的成就，面临的主要经济、社会问题，探讨了其原因和解决问题的办法。
“中国经济专题”是林毅夫教授在北大面向本科生开设的一门课程。课程开设于1998年，到《中国经济专题》成书时正好十年，累计听课人数已上万，课程以其前沿理论与本土化关注的完美结合深受广大学生的好评，并在刚刚过去的2007年当之无愧地被评选为北京大学精品课程。《中国经济专题》虽名为专题，实为对中国过去、现在和未来经济发展机遇与挑战的一个系统阐述和解析。
