最短的Britcom经典 —— Fawlty Towers
1971年，仍在Monty Python's Flying Circus剧组的Jonn Cleese和其他几位MP成员在英国著名滨海风景地Torquay拍戏时，碰到一位态度粗鲁、脾气恶劣的旅馆主人。Jone Cleese根据这一经历，创作了喜剧剧集Doctor at large中的一集No Ill Feeling!。该剧集的制作人当即认为该创意可以发展成一部情景喜剧，而John Cleese直到一段时间以后他已离开MPFC剧组，并受BBC邀请创作自己的剧集时，才将这一建议付诸行动。
Fawlty Towers由John Cleese和他当时的妻子Connie Booth共同创意并编剧，并且均出演主要角色。该剧集以Torquay一家小旅馆Fawlty Towers为背景，主要人物包括John Cleese饰演的旅馆主人，笨手笨脚、脾气糟糕、极度老派、市侩而且怕老婆到死的Basil Fawlty；爱唠叨、笑声可怕、能让比自己高一个半头的老公噤若寒蝉的旅馆女主人Sybil Fawlty；Connie Booth饰演的经常被搅进老板倒霉事的临时女侍Polly；以及Basil为了省钱而雇佣的、听不懂几句英文、经常遭老板拳脚相向的西班牙侍者兼小厮Manuel。由这四位经营的Fawlty Towers可想而知是经常陷入窘境难以自拔了，而旅馆的几位长住客人和各色过往人等则常常成为其中的牺牲品。
John Cleese夫妇对Fawlty Towers的创作投入了极大精力，力求在各集之间保持一致的风格和水准，同时求精不求多，创作了第一季共6集之后即停手。1975年第一季在BBC2台播出，反响不能说是巨大，某些评论还持批评态度，而到了第一次重播时，受到观众和评论界的广泛好评，BBC因而邀请Cleese夫妇将该剧集延续下去。婚姻已经开始走下坡路的John Cleese和Connie Booth经过慎重考虑，决定在保持第一季风格和水平的前提下续写一季共6集。第二季的创作丝毫没有因为第一季的成功而开始草率马虎、敷衍了事，同时也没有受到两人个人生活风波的影响。1979年，第二季在BBC2台播出，由于和第一季已经相去4年，而且因电视台员工罢工导致播出档期打乱，评论界反响一般，认为较前季水平有差距。然而随着时间迁移，多次的重播使观众可以完整欣赏全剧，绝大多数的评论都承认这两季共12集保持了一致的高水准，浑然一体。获奖方面，第一季和第二季均获得当年BAFTA最佳喜剧剧集奖，John Cleese并在1980年获BAFTA最佳轻喜剧表演奖。
与其它一些经典英国情景喜剧多季大长篇不同，Fawlty Towers一共只有短短两季12集6个小时，然而三十年来一直深受观众喜爱，不仅在英国时常重播，而且在大洋彼岸的美国和加拿大也极受欢迎。在美国，除了播出BBC原版外，还有若干次不成功的翻拍尝试。2003年，在BBC举办的最受欢迎英国情景喜剧网络评选中，这部短小精致的剧集以17万票排名第5，英国电影学院BFI 2000年组织的英国最佳电视节目评选中此剧集排名第一，而剧集DVD 版在AMAZON的顾客评价中也获得4.5~5颗星的高分。
2005年，BBC还特别制作了节目'Fawlty Towers'@30以庆祝此剧30周年。
