拜占廷帝国(即东罗马帝国)是欧洲中世纪的重要帝国，其历史延续了千余年，对中古欧洲和西亚各国产生过巨大影响，特别是其文化成为连接古典希腊、罗马时代到意大利文艺复兴时期的近代欧洲文明的桥梁，在世界历史上占有相当重要的地位。因此，国际学术界对其历史与文化的研究给予很大的重视，使之迅速成为一门“显学”。由于拜占廷希腊语的艰深和有关的历史资料贫乏，使我国学术界在此领域的研究一直落后于欧、美等国。陈教授两次赴希腊进修、留学，专攻拜占廷史。回国后，继续从事拜占廷史的研究，发表了数十篇有关的论文，出版了《拜占廷通史》和军事史等著作。《拜占廷学研究》一书共有7章，详细介绍和阐明了作者近年来对拜占廷政治、经济、宗教、文化以及对外关系诸问题研究的新成果、新观点，是作者的一部力作。全书观点新颖，信息量大，定能对拜占廷学的研究起到推起作用。
