60年代初，广州西关一条狭窄、旧陋的小巷中居住着区老枢父子。50开外的区老枢是旧社会过来的老艺人，他酷爱广东音乐，编写过不少优美动人的曲谱。他毕生最大的心愿便是发表自己的曲集，可惜这个愿望至死未能实现。
他的儿子冠仔颇具音乐天赋，并一直受到父亲的熏陶。但由于从小失去母爱，生活的负担使他过早地成熟，养成了耿直的性格。在他们父子周围居住着形形色色的邻居，有热爱广东音乐而又心地善良的盲人；有与冠仔青梅竹马、两小无猜的慧女。小巷里人与人之间洋溢着友爱的暖流。
但是，"文革"的狂风暴雨打破了小巷的平静。人们喜爱的音乐被禁止了，曲谱虽然被区老枢藏了下来，但小冠仔却因在批斗区老枢的大会上听到父亲婚变"丑史"而深受刺激，一气之下，离家出走，串联、下乡，一去就是多年……
10年后，变得高大、粗犷、面容冷漠的冠仔回到了物是人非的小巷，见到了消瘦、苍老的父亲。父亲仍念念不忘那包下落不明的曲谱，冠仔既是怜悯，又不以为然。但他们却没有想到这包曲谱后来的命运--大部分被焚烧，少数珍品在海内外发表了，有的竟变成了广东音乐四大天王之一何大傻的佚曲。区老枢积劳成疾，离开了人间。在他死后，他最钟爱的《雁飞云天》被改编为钢琴协奏曲，登上大雅之堂，轰动一时。而他的名字依然被埋没着。
生活又把冠仔和他昔日的亲人、朋友重新聚集到一起。另嫁他人的生母、粤剧名旦小红棉对冠仔怀着深深的内疚，但冠仔始终没能理解母亲内心的痛苦；少时的女友慧女现已有了家庭、孩子，虽然对冠仔仍旧情难忘，但也只能默默地为他祝福；同母异父的妹妹、音乐学院钢琴系毕业生韵芝不避前嫌、不计较冠仔的冷落，几访区家，取得了区老枢的残迹遗稿，一曲成功……
冠仔从这些纠葛中看到父亲曲谱的价值所在，真正认识了父亲对粤剧音乐做出的贡献，同时也对社会和人生有了新的、更为深刻的理解。

1945年秋，侵华日军无条件向中国投降，5名八路军收尸战士——排长（陶泽如）、胡子（刘若雷）、大个子（葛亚明）、瘦子（周琦）和小个子——在掩埋烈士遗体时，在一座破旧的古庙中发现一名即将饿毙的日俘（孙敏），并从他口中得知不远处有一支与大部队失掉联系的日军小部队。共有32名日军的该小部队守卫着地处陡峭崖壁的山洞里的秘密军火库，已断粮多日。
5名战士将山洞包围喊话，表示会无偿提供食物，军曹（胡宗琪）带领日军走出洞口哄抢食物时，一名瘦骨嶙峋的中国劳工跑了出来，局面一度紧张，不久几名几乎被摧残致死的中国劳工被救出。5名战士奉劝日军认清形势缴械投降，日军不肯，双方僵持良久。其后大部分日军举起双手，但日军中尉（丛培信）已成疯子。

赵书信（刘子枫 饰）做了那么多年的工程师，总算被升职成为了局长，然而，令他没有想到的是，等待着他的却是排山倒海般的各类文件和开不完的无聊会议，令他感到窒息。灵机一动之下，赵书信做了一个和他样貌一模一样的智能机器人，将自己不愿意参与的工作打发给这个机器人做，每一次，机器人都能出色的完成这些任务，没有被任何人察觉出破绽。

Devout Buddhists, Norbu and Dolma live with their young son Tashi in a clan in Tibet. Norbu is a highwayman. After Norbu is charged with stealing from the temple, he and his family are banished. Impoverished and marginalized, they can do little when their beloved son becomes ill. Tashi dies of a fever. After a second son is born, Norbu focuses his every action on keeping this child alive, seeking re-admission to the clan for his wife and child, then risking all to save them from isolation and starvation in winter.

An unschooled young man, one of the countless victims of Mao's Cultural Revolution, is laboring in the countryside when he is assigned to teach in a nearby school. Gradually, he abandons the Maoist textbook and encourages the barely literate kids to write about their own lives and feelings.

Set in the People's Republic of China during the 1990s, the film centers on a 13-year-old substitute teacher, Wei Minzhi, in the Chinese countryside. Called in to substitute for a village teacher for one month, Wei is told not to lose any students.

Journalist Gou Yujia (played by Niu Zhenhua), laid-off female worker Cheng Fen (played by Ding Jiali), individual business owner Lv Dou (played by Wang Jinsong), and wealthy man Lao Cha (played by Ju Hao) are members of Class 1025 at the driving school, practicing under the guidance of Coach Hou, a retired soldier. As time passes, they gradually understand each other's habits. This period of time at the driving school is filled with twists and turns, but all challenges are overcome, and the covert and overt struggles among the five end with the smooth passage of the exams. The experiences at the driving school bring out the joys and sorrows of these five individuals, and besides learning the rules of driving, it seems they have also learned the rules of survival.

Wang Bianlian is an aging street performer known as the King of Mask for his mastery of Sichuan Change Art in a true story. His wife left him with and infant son over 30 years ago. The son died from illness at age 10. This left Wang a melancholy loner aching for a male descendent to learn his rare and dying art.
