In 1944, a group of high command officers plot an attempt against Hitler, and one of the leaders of the conspiracy, Stauffenberg, goes to a meeting with the Fuhrer in charge of exploding the place. However, Hitler survives and the officers are executed. This unsuccessful operation was called "Valkyrie Operation", and this realistic movie discloses this true event.

In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. A Soviet Russian lady officer, a Chinese peasant and a Japanese schoolgirl must walk their way out of a forest toward the end of World War II, despite their mutual distrust of one another.

1965年熊井启以真人真事为素材，以写实的手法拍摄了政治纪实性影片《日本列岛》。这部改编自吉原公一郎文学作品的影片，通过对美国占领时期第9研究所丢失一台赞梅尔印刷机所引发事件的层层追查，深刻揭露了一个无可辩驳的事实，即美国为了自己国家的利益而秘密赦免战争罪犯，然后招募他们从事军事医学研究，日后把研究成果使用于发动朝鲜战争及越南战争的军事进攻等。该片被《电影旬报》评为当年10大佳片第3名。有意思的是《日本列岛》完成后，日本警视厅曾强硬要求剪掉一部分带点性爱镜头的关键戏，理由是过于猥亵。

筱田正浩导演一向追求理性的题材和电影画面的美感，长期处于日本电影界的先锋地位。他自称为“最后的作品”—历史大作《间谍佐尔格》将于14日公映。该片以“战争”、“日本”为主题，加上电影技术等，可以说是融入了筱田导演近年电影的集大成。

冷静地观察日本

《间谍佐尔格》这部影片是以即将进入第二次世界大战中的日本为主要舞台。该片通过对向苏联秘密提供日本军部和德国军事动向的间谍—理查德·佐尔格和向他提供情报的日本新闻记者—尾崎秀实的刻画，反映了“昭和”时代的情形。

14岁时经历过日本战败的筱田导演说:“自己也曾经是想为天皇献身的皇国少年。但读了佐尔格事件的资料后，对他们能够冷静分析当时情况深感吃惊。这两人对当时的日本看得很通透。”

在影片《濑户内少年棒球队》、《少年时代》等“少年三部曲”中也进行刻画的日本的战败成了筱田导演的核心题材。他的观点透视到现代，认为“8月15日是日本人的‘活断层’。那个时候，国家败亡，日本人至今都想找回自己的国民意识，却怎么也找不到。”

在影片中，佐尔格被描绘成抱着和平和国际共产主义理想从事间谍活动的人物，尾崎则被刻画成一名想为被日本军国主义蹂躏的中国人民尽点力的人物。

渺茫的希望

“20世纪从共产主义开始，也以其崩溃结束。这两个人留的血有意义吗？再进一步说，人类为什么要战争呢？虽然我对人类实现彻底的和平已经绝望了，但是人类如果不继续走下去就不会找到出路。”在影片中插入的约翰·列侬的《想象》和鲁迅的话语中寄托了导演的愿望。

该电影从佐尔格和尾崎被逮捕的场面开始倒叙。不仅这部电影，筱田导演的电影中的主人公多数都是没能实现自己的理想，走向末路的人。

关于这点，筱田导演说：“我自己就是输给美国和美国文化的人。但是获胜的一方只会变得傲慢，而输的一方却能看清整体。从受到挫折的人身上才能归纳出整个状况。”

以数码技术作为突破口

从被称为“新浪潮派”的松竹时代到与已故的宫川一夫摄像师（注：黑泽明《七武士》等影片的摄像师）共同合作，筱田导演都以“映像派”而出名。在这部影片中，影片画面的数码化也是值得关注的一点。

筱田导演说：“电影的百年历史是通过胶片来体现画面的美感，如果只是拘泥于这种技术，那将是时代性的错误。我想，制作出一部不输给好莱坞电影的、场面宏大的电影，并且表现只有日本人才能作出来的世界，这样的电影只有通过数码化画面才能制作。”

不使用胶片，用数码高清晰度摄像机拍摄，并将画面保存在电脑里，这就是数码电影制作的主要过程。合成通过CG（电脑制图）再现的战前的银座街道等场景。在影片《写乐》中试验性的用了十几个CG片断，在影片《枭之城》中有一百多个CG片断，而在这部影片中CG片断增加到了980个。

筱田导演说：“这部影片中包含了日本现代史、数码画面、电影社会学等各种知识。以后再要创作电影的话，有必要进行新的学术研究”。他表示将在退休后回到母校早稻田大学培养下一代人才。

Two North Korean soldiers are killed in the border area between North and South Korea, prompting an investigation by a neutral body. The sergeant is the shooter, but the lead investigator, a Swiss-Korean woman, receives differing accounts from the two sides.

A Jewish ghetto in the east of Europe, 1944. By coincidence, Jakob Heym eavesdrops on a German radio broadcast announcing the Soviet Army is making slow by steady progress towards central Europe. In order to keep his companion in misfortune, Mischa, from risking his life for a few potatoes, he tells him what he heard and announces that he is in possession of a radio - in the ghetto a crime punishable by death. It doesn't take long for word of Jakob's secret to spread - suddenly, there is new hope and something to live for - and so Jakob finds himself in the uncomforting position of having to come up with more and more stories.

A young soldier enters Germany with Soviet troops at the end of WWII, feeling like a stranger in his homeland. As he meets Germans, he grapples with his ambivalence, realizing he is both a victor and one of the vanquished. His inquisitive nature leads him to confront the atrocities and lies he encounters along the way.
