À la différence de la plupart des femmes qui ont marqué notre histoire durant la première moitié du XXe siècle, elle n’est ni religieuse ni mariée. Il s’agit d’une femme autonome qui assure seule sa subsistance. Comédienne, gardienne de la langue française, journaliste, militante, Idola Saint-Jean est une « self-made woman ». En un mot, c’est une femme insoumise, qui refuse de se plier aux stratégies tout en douceur des féministes au langage réservé, comme Marie Gérin-Lajoie, ou au ton diplomatique, comme Thérèse Casgrain. Ce qui distingue son action, c’est la recherche d’une identité différente, urbaine, francophone, dégagée d’un lourd nationalisme du terroir.
