Cape Coast Radio Douban
Cape Coast Radio genre: Rock
release date 2011-11-07 publisher: Zeal
Cape Coast Radio is the cheerful playground of Nick Berkvens (ex-Transit). Nick and the brothers Wouter and Lode Vlaeminck (tomàn) immersed themselves in the alter-ego’s Ed the vulture, Ned the rhinoceros and Ted the mandrill, three friends from the African plains. During their travels on the vibrant savannah they recorded their self-titled debut album soaked in African inspired bright indie-pop.
Live, Cape Coast Radio comprises of a pulsating six-piece all-star band with members of Isbells, Marble Sounds and Sleepingdog and fronted by the young energetic vocalist Tom.
It is as if Vampire Weekend were exposed to the albums of The Notwist, or Yeasayer to those of Pinback, while on a thrilling safari in the heart of the vast savannah.
Already promising finalist of the vi.be select season 2010/2011 on Studio Brussel along with SX and Teddiedrum.
Widowspeak Douban
Widowspeak genre: Rock
release date 2011-08-09 publisher: Captured Tracks
The Brooklyn-based trio Widowspeak consists of Molly Hamilton on vocals and rhythm guitar, Michael Stasiak on drums, and Rob Thomas on lead guitar. The band create a dreamy vintage sound using stripped-down drumbeats, breathy vocals, and delicately placed guitar leads.
The single “Harsh Realm” is a great tune in which singer Molly Hamilton’s voice has a whispery, seductive, drugged-out vibe similar to [ Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star ] yet she retains a unique enough sound to swim in her own pond. Her rhythm guitar sounds similar to a softer, less gritty version of [ PJ Harvey’s ] early playing as she bounces between some dry chords locked in to Michael Stasiak’s minimalist but forward-moving drum groove.
The sparkles and dynamics of the song come from the band’s lead guitarist, Rob Thomas, who plays some nicely placed, shimmering guitar leads that would fit nicely on any Chris Isaak album or Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch soundtrack. The slow-tempo song “Burn Out” has a very sleepy and dreamy verse, but when the chorus breaks, the band all lock in for a unique, upbeat, and intricate hook as Hamilton sings, “It can wait, everything else can wait.”
Widowspeak’s first seven-inch single is stark but very engaging. Released in early March on Captured Tracks, the first four hundred copies were printed on white vinyl, or you can download it from the band or on iTunes. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this, and I am eagerly looking forward to hearing the band’s upcoming full-length.

Gauntlet Hair Douban
Gauntlet Hair genre: Rock
release date 2011-10-18 publisher: Dead Oceans
Written and recorded in Spring 2011 at Andy's grandmother's Chicago-area house while she was away on vacation, Gauntlet Hair is a subtle refinement of the sounds we've come to associate with the band the trunk-rattling bass; the ecstatic, tinny post-punk guitar; the din of ecstasy. But what was once simply jarring in its audacity is now also bursting with new colors. While the band continues to mine the pulse-and-clap cues of modern club rap, the intricacies of Andy's Durutti Column-inspired, circular guitar lines come a bit more to the fore on Gauntlet Hair.

Who Loves the Sun Douban
Portastatic
release date 2006-06-06 publisher: Merge Records
This marks Mac McCaughan's second foray (following 2001's "Looking For Leonard") into soundtrack work in the guise of his musical alter ego, Portastatic. Inspired by film music from composers such as Henry Mancini, Ry Cooder, Francis Lai, and Piero Umiliani, Portastatic's score is a beautiful musical interpretation of the themes of the people we love and how much we hate them, sex, and the ensuing tensions that can arise within the confines of friendship and the extended family. In addition to Mac's traditional guitar-based songs, he incorporates strings, oboe, flute, and piano to propel the infectious melodies. Fans of Belle Orchestre, Rachel's, and Calexico will enjoy this score. The film stars Lukas Haas and Molly Parker.
