胖女孩贝卡在一所小学当音乐老师，热爱歌唱的她经常到酒吧献唱，也因此邂逅了一段美丽的爱情。男友亚当是酒吧老板，他刚刚向贝卡求了婚，贝卡将这个好消息告诉了家人，全家人都为他们感到高兴。对于婚礼贝卡和亚当都没有什么太多的要求，只是希望能够到个风景优美的地方度蜜月。但两个人收入有限，对于蜜月还需要精心计划一下。

但贝卡心意已决，她要证明并不是只有瘦骨嶙峋的女孩才能赢得选美比赛，只要敢于面对生活，充满自信，谁都可以是最美的女孩。贝卡的妹妹雷切尔和外婆都十分支持她，没有工作的雷切尔充分发挥了自己在服装设计和裁剪方面的特长，为贝卡量身制作了参加比赛的服装。
大赛开始了，和几十名佳丽同场竞技令贝卡十分兴奋。妈妈在外婆的劝说下也来到赛场为她助阵，这让贝卡感到一丝安慰。但亚当却始终没有出现，其实他依然关心贝卡的比赛，只是选择在酒吧观看现场直播。经过几轮的淘汰，贝卡、利比和几个女孩脱颖而出。最后一个环节前，贝卡找到利比，并告诉她在贝卡心中利比一直都是非常漂亮的女孩，只是自尊心促使自己从不肯承认。利比被贝卡感动，其实她早已厌倦母亲为她安排的这条选美之路，她希望能过自己的生活，两人冰释前嫌。
比赛结果出来了，尽管贝卡得了第二名，但无论是对她自己还是家人这都是个非常满意的结局。贝卡终于证明了自己，她兴奋地跑到酒吧，将这个消息告诉亚当。而亚当则早已等候在那里，他知道自己深爱的那个自信、乐观、不畏艰难的女孩又回来了。
