以名叫「虹之原」的地方為舞台，描述同年級的小學生們的過去與現在相互交錯的故事──小孩子們之間流傳的謠言、隧道裡頭的怪物、家族的秘密、蝴蝶發生了異常的現象……等等各種事件交織而成，新世紀默世錄就此誕生。

时光荏苒，作为妇产医生已经能够独当一面的鸿鸟樱来到了曾经的恩师荻岛胜秀所在的离岛医院。看着和岛上居民近距离接触的荻岛的身影，樱开始思考一件事情。
另一方面，曾经是研修医的下屋和新生儿科的白川都成为了专业医师继续工作着。
从离岛归来的樱和助产士小松一起诊察了耳朵听不见的孕妇早见愛菜。她的丈夫健治也有一同前来，但健治是一位聋哑人。因为医疗术语用手语或者唇语都很难传达，所以改用了白板进行笔谈。
另一方面，产科医四宫诊察了想要早日回归职场的职业女性佐野彩加。彩加向四宫询问自己是否可以按照预产期进行生产，但四宫却并没有回答她，而是专心地做着B超检查。检查的结果，彩加的宝宝患有“心室中隔欠损”，是一种心脏上有小孔的疾病。彩加因此十分动摇，围产期中心的负责人今桥与四宫一起向彩加的丈夫康孝仔细传达了这件事。想要早日回归职场的彩加的心情与宝宝的疾病交织在一起，带来了双重不安。
而爱菜在生产前，也向樱阐述了自己的不安……
