在本剧开始的时候，臭名昭著的连环杀手Joe Carroll（James Purefoy）从死囚大牢中越狱逃走，再次在社会上大开杀戒，无计可施的联邦调查局只好求助于已经退休的探员Ryan Hardy（Kevin Bacon）。九年前，Hardy凭借自己的努力亲手逮捕了心理极度变态的Carroll－－当时公开身份为大学文学教师的Carroll已经在弗吉尼亚州的大学校园里谋杀了14名女学生。Hardy知道Carroll的一切，他就像一本专门为Carroll而存在的「活百科全书」。正因为如此，他是Carroll唯一的对手－－无论是心理层面还是智力层面。
