和一般的动画不同之处就在于，《无限的未知》并不仅仅是描写一部机械与战争的热血漫画，在这部片子里我们看到的更多的是当绝望充斥着整个利维亚斯内，每个平凡人的表现。并且编导用了一个比较特别的表现形式，那就是自始至终出现在利维亚斯内的神秘少女。一个开始感觉如rei般的女孩，一个单纯到近乎白纸的女孩，一个从未接触过外人完全不了解人心的女孩。在这个船舱内如若无人境地的走动，感受着没一个人的恐惧，悲伤和绝望。于是这个开始面无表情的女孩变得会笑、会哭、会忧伤、会愤怒，然后更加强大。

美术大学学生竹本和学长真山以及多次留级的森田一起生活在单身公寓里，大家的生活风清云淡却也乐趣无穷。

隈罗，药袋家族的后裔，幼年不具有看到虫的能力，为了应对禁忌之虫，被长期置于荆棘之路的出口，导致“灵魂”被核食虫所食，失去“灵魂”的他，被灌入了人造虫代替自己的“灵魂”，每次使用人造虫后会变成一局空壳，需要重新灌入人造虫才能“复活”，但会失去人的感情。
银古则是受淡幽所托，陪伴隈罗去调查一座山中虫异动的现象。。。
