本书是著名历史学家来新夏先生等北洋军阀史研究的重要成果，也是目前国内唯一一部专门研究和完整记述北洋军阀集团兴起、发展、纷争、衰落和退出的集大成之作。它以非常丰富的史料和国内外学者的相关研究成果为基础，以北洋军阀兴衰为主线，对1895-1928年中国社会历史问题作了系统而深入的探索，提出了很多新的观点和思考，极大地拓展了这一历史时期的研究空间和认识空间。

嘉永六年（一八五三）六月，美國海軍將領培里率領艦隊出現在浦賀沖，使得幕府官員倉皇失措，也撼動了德川家族在平定內亂、實行閉關鎖國後確立的兩百餘年「太平盛世」。在列強叩關的壓迫下，德川幕府於次年被迫開國，日本的傳統政治及社會體系開始遭受現代化發展的西方文明衝擊。外患之外，此時日本國內的局勢也不平靜：天皇所在的京都頻繁發生「天誅」等恐怖行動，以長州為首的攘夷激進派勢力達到空前了全勝期，就連坂本龍馬也死於非命。
一連串激烈的變動將日本一步步推向前所未有的巨大改革，過去高高在上的將軍德川慶喜一夕間淪為「朝敵」（天皇、朝廷的敵人），即便江戶城在倒幕和挺幕雙方的協調下無血開城，但是內戰終究無法避免——無論是開城前的鳥羽伏見之戰、開城後奮力一搏的會津戰役，因應王政復古成立的明治新政府終究擊潰江戶幕府勢力，被美國歷史學家吉拉德‧霍恩譽為「人類歷史上最不尋常的發展之一」的明治維新於焉展開。之後，一個亞洲的先進社會誕生。

《佛罗伦萨史》分为八卷，每卷又分为若干章。第一卷概述意大利从西罗马帝国末年到十五世纪的历史。在记述了蛮族入侵、意大利半岛分崩离析、封建主混战、雇佣军横行和城市内部的党争之后，作者不禁深深慨叹：“因此，在我写的这部历史中，必然会充满这类昏庸的君主和如此卑劣的军队。”（第一卷，第七章）第二卷以同样笔法概述了佛罗萨从建筑之初到十四世纪中叶美第奇家庭初露头角时期的历史。第两郑可以看作是全书的导言。……
