剧情简介：
德国法西斯1940年5月10日开始进攻西欧，英法联军防线在德国机械化部队快速攻势下崩溃。5月26日晚英法联军开始了“敦刻尔克大撤退”，同时法国政府宣布巴黎为不设防城市后逃到波尔多。临时政府就在当地一家豪华旅馆办公。
女明星维维亚娜·当韦尔Viviane Denvers（伊莎贝尔·阿佳妮饰）跟随她的男朋友、内务部长让-埃蒂安·博福尔Jean-Étienne Beaufort（热拉尔·德帕迪厄饰）来到这里，等待逃往南部。博福尔不停地跟其他官员争吵，力主对德国让步换取和平。
年轻作家弗雷德里克·奥热Frédéric Auger（格雷戈里·德朗热尔饰）是维维亚娜的秘密情人，战争爆发前替她顶下一项杀人罪。6月13日晚，德军逼近，巴黎大乱，弗雷德里克和小贼拉乌尔 Raoul（伊万·阿达勒饰）一起逃出监狱。6月14日，德军攻占巴黎，弗雷德里克跟着逃难的人群来到波尔多。
在路上，两个逃犯认识了女学生卡米叶Camille（维尔日妮·勒杜瓦扬饰）和她的物理系教授科波尔斯基Kopolski（让-马克·斯特莱饰），师生两人想把一车重水送到英国，先得到波尔多找船和办理许可证。
德国人听到风声，也想得到这批重水，安排他们的间谍到波尔多拦截。
影片主要讲述的，就是巴黎沦陷次日的这一天——1940年6月15日，这五个人及一个德国间谍的经历：
维维亚娜愧对弗雷德里克，又要对博福尔隐藏真相，良心备受折磨。
博福尔跟内阁成员辩论了一天，毫无进展。
弗雷德里克终于知道了维维亚娜当初是故意杀人的真相，只能借酒浇愁。
落难的官僚还是官僚，没人愿意承担责任，给卡米叶他们放行。政府内部的法奸还派警察去没收重水。
拉乌尔及其小偷朋友们偷了一车波尔多红酒，在路上遇到教授，帮他们抢回了重水，藏到他跟弗雷德里克居住的小旅馆。
当天晚上波尔多下起大雨，酒醉的弗雷德里克见到卡米叶，两人擦出爱火花，弗雷德里克听说了重水的事，就去找刚才在酒吧见到的英国水兵求助。水兵让他们明早把重水送到海边。就在他们准备上车离开时，维维亚娜在记者亚历克斯Alex（彼得·科约特饰）的护送下突然出现。她已经离开了博福尔，想跟弗雷德里克跟她一起去尼斯。
维维亚娜的迷人魅力让弗雷德里克改变了主意，拉乌尔只好驾车带着卡米叶和科波尔斯基教授去海边。然而，亚历克斯是个德国间谍，他敏感地发现了车里的教授和重水，打电话报告给了秘密警察，但这同时也暴露了他的真实身份。弗雷德里克与他进行了搏斗。随后，深感危险的弗雷德里克驾车追赶拉乌尔三人。
拉乌尔在途中被秘密警察拦截击昏，卡米叶和教授被抓，后因汽车故障被赶到的弗雷德里克解救，但拉乌尔身负重伤被交给了修女院的嬷嬷们。弗雷德里克、教授和重水都上了英国海军的小艇。
有人决定逃到伦敦，但也有人决定留在德国占领的法国更好。卡米叶返回巴黎参加地下抵抗运动。尽管惊诧亚历克斯是个德国间谍，但维维亚娜也无处着落，只有跟他回到巴黎重操旧业。
1942年4月28日，弗雷德里克从英国潜回巴黎见卡米叶。两人在露天咖啡馆被盘查的盖世太保追进了一家电影院，便佯装接吻。一阵熟悉的歌声传入弗雷德里克的耳朵，他惊讶地发现银幕上载歌载舞的维维亚娜，可见她正大红大紫咧。这时候，弗雷德里克感到必须要给他的身边人一个真正的吻。
