如果说《想当年》是费里尼对少年时代的回忆，《八部半》是对他中年创作危机的记载，《罗马》是对他所爱的城市的礼赞，那么本片就是他对Cinecitta电影厂的颂歌。
影片将回忆、嘲讽、自省、幻想等元素融合在一起，让我们见识了镜头前后的各种人物。影片高潮是《甜蜜的生活》的重映把片中主角重新聚集一堂，颇有一点大师主掌央视《同一首歌》的味道。

导演费里尼的《乐队排演》，拍摄了一个交响乐团的排演状况，其中，相当讽刺地呈现出五花八门的情境气氛，什么都有，就是没有一般想像中的一个交响乐团乐团该有的和谐愉悦，团员之间的摩擦不合，象徵着人类社会的常态，在片中，团长成为某种「神」一般的存在，费里尼藉着检视音乐家们的种种喜怒哀乐，这个独特场景下人物的互动，变成人类社会的缩影。
片中音乐是由费里尼的长期合作伙伴，义大利配乐大师尼洛罗塔创作，罗塔的作品，为本片生色不少。

美国作家彼得•尼尔（Anthony Franciosa 饰）善写恐怖惊悚小说，其作品风靡欧洲各国。不久前，意大利出版了他的最新作品——《坦妮布丽（Tenebre）》，很快他便收到一封来自罗马的信件。来信者称他从彼得的作品中得到灵感，并运用到杀人的实践中去。随后一名年轻漂亮的女子被人残忍杀害，其作案手法正与《坦妮布丽》中的杀人手法相同。
彼得立即联系罗马警方，两名得力警探（Giuliano Gemma & Carola Stagnaro 饰）随即受命调查此案。然而罪犯并未就此罢休，不断有年轻女性遇害。一时间人心惶惶，形势迫在眉睫……
