One that doesn't require many hours and, when it does require work, doesn't interfere with his busiest times at the pawn shop. To Sherlock Holmes, it could be much more than it appears. The beginning of a larger mystery? Using minute details of the smaller one, he works to solve the more serious one. "Depend upon it," said Holmes to Watson in "A Case of Identity." "There is nothing so unnatural as the commonplace."

Lestrade of the Yard summons Holmes to a community in Herefordshire, where a local land owner has been murdered outdoors. The deceased's estranged son is strongly implicated. Holmes quickly determines that a mysterious third man may be responsible for the crime, unraveling a thread involving a secret criminal past, thwarted love, and blackmail.

Sherlock Holmes, the world's 'only unofficial consulting detective', was first introduced to readers in "A Study in Scarlet" introduced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. It was with the publication of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," however, that the master sleuth grew tremendously in popularity, later to become one of the most beloved literary characters of all time.

In "The Five Orange Pips," one of the short stories in "Adventures ..," John Openshaw visits Baker Street to consult Sherlock Holmes as to the mysterious deaths of both his uncle and father upon the arrival of letters containing only five dried orange pips and an envelope mark 'K.K.K.'. The young gentleman further relates that he too has received a similar envelope with instructions to surrender some papers. Holmes quickly deduces that his client faces imminent danger from a secret society in America.

The short stories comprising "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" have been amusingly illustrated using only Lego® brand minifigures and bricks. The illustrations recreate, through custom designed Lego models, the composition of the black and white drawings by Sidney Paget that accompanied the original publication of these adventures appearing in "The Strand Magazine" from July 1891 to June 1892. A strange place to bump into one another!

Holmes and Dr. Watson discover each other in the black shadows of a smoke-filled opium den in the basement of the very house where Holmes is investigating his latest murder case! But of course the good doctor is only there to hunt down the drug-addicted husband of his wife's dear, but distraught, friend. Sound confusing? For all but The Great Detective, it probably is. And we haven't even talked about the murder yet!

When the Countess of Morcar's priceless blue carbuncle is stolen, a reformed thief is charged with the crime.

But a strange thing happens. Trivial is what Sherlock Holmes calls it. He's studying an old hat when Dr. Watson visits to wish him "The compliments of the season." Holmes tells Watson about Commissionaire Peterson's report of seeing a little knot of roughs assault a man carrying a Christmas goose home for the family. They all ran, leaving both the goose and the hat. No one could locate the man, Henry Baker, whose name was tagged to the goose so Peterson took possession.

Soon another strange thing - Mrs. Peterson found Morcar's fabulous blue jewel inside the goose while preparing it for their family festivities.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901–02) is Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes adventure. A young London engineer, contracted to service a hydraulic press at a country house, discovers that the owner is using the machine for illegal purposes. After confronting the owner, the engineer narrowly escapes death and loses a thumb when the owner turns on him. The young man, Victor Hatherley, escapes and comes to see Holmes who, upon hearing the story, deduces the actual use of the machine and sets off to bring the evildoers to justice. The main question is, "What's is actually going on at Eyford in Berkshire?"

Dr. Watson faints for the first and last time in his life when the believed-to-be-dead Sherlock Holmes reappears three years after his apparent death.

Readers will recall 'The Final Problem,' which is the last short story in 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.' And the fatal incident at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Watson was there. So imagine his surprise when an old man he bumped into on the street, a collector of books, turned out to be his old friend.

Watson had taken an interest in the strange case of a young aristocrat found shot to death in a locked room on Park Lane. But the criminal investigation, although of huge interest to the public, was not progressing. Then Holmes returned.

'For me, Watson, life is not so interesting,' says Holmes. 'I loved to read the newspaper, hoping to find some news of an interesting crime for me to investigate or a dangerous criminal for me to catch. Where are all those clever criminals these days?'

Then, suddenly, a wild, excited young man, a Mr. John Hector McFarland, runs up the stairs to Holmes' room. He has a story to tell about a fire and strange crime that took place in Norwood. But who is the criminal? Is it this man? Is he dangerous? Life, for Holmes, suddenly starts to get interesting.

But when Holmes and Watson rush off, it's to Blackheath, not Norwood.

One of the more famous short stories in the Sherlock Holmes collection. A sensation when first published in 1903. It was Doyle's third favourite of all his Holmes stories.

Mr. Hilton Cubitt of Norfolk visits Holmes and Watson about little drawings looking like dancing men which have been appearing in letters and at his home. He's anxious but is new wife Elsie is terrified. Can the famous detective be of assistance?

When the young and lovely Violet Smith arrives to consult with Sherlock Holmes, he first regards the experiences related by her with a degree of impatience and disinterest. He's busy on another matter you see, but there might be something in her story.

She enjoys cycling and tells about being shadowed by a mysterious man on a bicycle as she cycles to and from her new employer's home as a music teacher. As Holmes and Watson investigate, a dark, dangerous picture begins to emerge that threatens the young lady's safety and ultimately her freedom. Holmes takes up the case.

'Priory School' opens in a most exciting fashion!

The story opens, in the words of Dr. Watson, with "We have had some dramatic entrances and exits upon our small stage at Baker Street, but I cannot recollect anything more sudden and startling than the first appearance of Thorneycroft Huxtable, M.A., Ph.D., etc. His card, which seemed too small to carry the weight of his academic distinctions, preceded him by a few seconds, and then he entered himself—so large, so pompous, and so dignified that he was the very embodiment of self-possession and solidity. And yet his first action when the door had closed behind him was to stagger against the table, whence he slipped down upon the floor, and there was that majestic figure prostrate and insensible upon our bearskin hearthrug."

A young student at Huxtable's school has disappeared, the son of a former Cabinet Minister. Once recovered from his fainting spell, Huxtable implores Holmes to come back with him to Mackleton in the north of England to get to the bottom of this terrible occurrence.

How about this for an opening?

Dr. Watson narrates: "I have never known my friend to be in better form, both mental and physical, than in the year '95. His increasing fame had brought with it an immense practice, and I should be guilty of an indiscretion if I were even to hint at the identity of some of the illustrious clients who crossed our humble threshold in Baker Street. Holmes, however, like all great artists, lived for his art's sake, and, save in the case of the Duke of Holdernesse, I have seldom known him claim any large reward for his inestimable services. So unworldly was he-or so capricious-that he frequently refused his help to the powerful and wealthy where the problem made no appeal to his sympathies, while he would devote weeks of most intense application to the affairs of some humble client whose case presented those strange and dramatic qualities which appealed to his imagination and challenged his ingenuity."

And then Watson comes to the "very obscure circumstances which surrounded the death of Captain Peter Carey" - a man who abused and terrified his wife and family, and a man well deserving of the nickname, 'Black Peter.'

Watch as Holmes and Watson push the limits of the law when they confront the machinations of a blackmailer whose victims either pay dearly or suffer life-destroying humiliation. After you finish reading, ask yourself how you would have handled the situation. It's another Conan Doyle short story about the life and times of Sherlock Holmes!

"The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" is one of 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and one of 13 in the collection "The Return of Sherlock Holmes."

Holmes, Watson and Inspector Lestrade have developed a friendship over the years and the police officer often drops in at 212B Baker Street after work to chat. This time Holmes correctly senses Lestrade has something on his mind and he responds positively. ".. It is such an absurd business that I hesitated to bother you about it." And then goes on, "A queer madness. You wouldn't think there was anyone living .. who had such a hatred of Napoleon the First that he would break any image of him that he could see."

When Lestrade mentions that the crime of burglary is involved, Holmes sits up with excitement.
