During the reign of King Sejong in the 15th century, the Joseon Dynasty was the embodiment of the perfect state. To the Ming China, the aspiring imperial power, Joseon presented an obstacle to territorial expansion. An easy-going corrupt detective is partnered up with a younger, more idealistic detective. The two try to influence each other to become more like themselves but must cooperate when faced with a strange case.

When the police raid the compound of a religious cult, they discover that almost all of the members have committed suicide. The only survivor, laying on an altar in the middle of the room, is a very pregnant woman who goes into labor as the raid begins. The woman dies in the hospital, but her child survives. 20 years later, strange things are starting to happen around the child, now a grown woman. A group of religious warriors from a mix of faiths join together to try and protect her from whatever supernatural horrors are seeking her out.

One day, Hyung decides to pay his fraudulent friend, Ki-hyuk, a visit, after having heard that he is dying of cancer. Ki-hyuk requests that Hyung look after his daughter, Nam-eun, once in a while after he dies. After Ki-yuk passes away, Hyung decides to visit his friend’s daughter. Noticing that Nam is more distressed over the death of her pet cat than her father, Hyung decides to look after her once in a while. Nam-eun too finds her father’s silly and unmarried friend quite interesting. Using Hyung’s dirty laundry as an excuse, Nam frequently visits Hyung, gradually expressing her feelings for him. Although awkward and surprised at first, Hyung too is curious about his feelings for his friend’s daughter. Soon, Hyung who was once simply Nam’s father’s friend becomes her man and they begin a series of unusual dates.

Lee Jong-se is a third-rate comedian who believes himself to be a creative genius. He desires nothing more than to be a movie director.

Fresh from the country, Duk-bae (Ahn Sung-ki), Chun-sik (Lee Young-ho), and Kil-nam (Kim Seong-chan) work at a Chinese restaurant, barbershop, and motel, respectively, in a newly-developing area just outside of Seoul. They share friendship and moral support with one another in their difficult lives. Due to ongoing development, even long-established inhabitants of the area are forced to give up their farmland and leave their homes. Meanwhile, Kil-nam is in love with a hairdresser named Jin-ok, and Chun-sik has his heart set on Miss Yu (Kim Bo-yeon), who works as a shaver in the same barbershop. Simplehearted Duk-bae finds himself torn between Chun-sun (Lim Ye-jin), a bright and spirited girl from the country, and Myung-hi (Yoo Ji-in), a foul-tempered yet captivating high society girl. However, Duk-bae learns that Myung-hi, who pretended to care for him, was merely playing with him. Similarly, Jin-ok runs off without paying back the money she owes Kil-nam. Although Miss Yu loves Chun-sik, she becomes the mistress of Mr. Kim (Choi Bul-am), a regular at the barbershop, in order to pay for her father's medical fees and her siblings' tuition. Enraged, Chun-sik stabs Mr. Kim and ends up in prison. Kil-nam enlists in the military, and Duk-bae resolves to defeat the world by boxing.

Born in Dongduchon, Chil-su is talented in art. While waiting for a wedding invitation from his sister in America, Chil-su quits his job painting theater signs which is his livelihood. He becomes Man-su's assistant. Man-su is in the army serving his military duty. He suffers under the dark shadow of his father. Chil-su gets dumped by Ji-na, a college student, and he loses all contacts with his sister. Understandably, Chil-su feels a little shaken. On the other hand, Man-su is unable to find stability. One night after they finished a large billboard, the two rave around the tower goofing around. However, the police are deployed when they misunderstand and think that they are trying to kill themselves. Through their misunderstanding, Man-su ultimately falls and injures himself while Chul-su is led away by the police.
