Ein Neubaugerippe in der Schlammwüste einer deutschen Vorstadt. Hagen Trinker, gespielt von Jürgen Vogel (Das Leben ist eine Baustelle, Die Apothekerin), gehört zu den Jüngeren der Obdachlosen, die hier gegen Regen und Kälte Schutz suchen. Gemeinsames Leid wird zum geteilten Leid. Im Stamm der Nomaden achtet jeder auf jeden, ohne den Angehörigen soziale Verhaltensmuster aufzudrängen.
Ganz im Gegensatz zu seinen Leidensgenossen scheint das Schicksal an Hagens Rückkehr auf den rechten Pfad interessiert zu sein. Doch trotzig weigert sich der Polizistensohn, gut gemeinte Ratschläge anzunehmen. Verbittert verharrt Hagen in seinem selbstgewählten Exil der Straße. Dann, eines Tages, erscheint die junge Ausreißerin Judith. Nach und nach gerät Hagens Fatalismus ins Wanken. Das Auftauen wird zum zähen und schmerzhaften Prozess. Als die Straßenfamilie durch Vertreibung und Eifersüchteleien zu zerbrechen droht, wird Hagen auf seine Eigenverantwortung zurückgeworfen. Er wird sich neu entscheiden müssen.
Die Vorgeschichten der Protagonisten werden bewusst nur angedeutet, der Film konzentriert sich auf den Alltag deutscher Straßenbewohner und mahnt indirekt das Fehlen von lebenswerten Alternativen zur konsumorientierten Karrieregesellschaft an. Die Tragödie des Einzelnen untersteht dem Gesamtbild einer egozentrischen Gesellschaft, die ihre verirrten Kinder im Wald zurücklässt.
Auch wenn Jan Schüttes (Winkelmanns Reisen, Auf Wiedersehen Amerika) Geschichte zwischen Pennerromantik und realistischer Milieustudie hin und her driftet, bezaubert die ungewöhnliche und stille Liebesgeschichte zwischen Judith und Hagen, zweier ausgesetzter Königskinder. Liebe und Leidenschaft blühen durchaus auch in einer Welt ohne Zielorientierung und pragmatischem Optimismus. Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von Helmut Krausser. --Peter Kuhn

Jan Nebel`s life is quite depressing and just a streak of bad luck. His former girlfriend tells him that she is HIV positive, his sister is married to a disgusting idiot and his father dies with his head on a plate of noodles. Above all, he gets into a street riot between anarchists and the police on the way to his job at a slaughterhouse. Thus, he is fired, but gets to know the mysterious Vera who becomes his new girlfriend. Together with Jan`s weird friend Buddy, they move into his father`s apartment and try to survive their Berlin everyday life...

This is my favourite German film - if you get a chance to watch 'Goodbye Lenin' and 'Berlin Nachtgestalten' as well, you have pretty much a 360 degree panorama of life in Berlin after the Wende. Superb acting, and very funny, too. The beautiful thing about this film is that the humour, being largely visual, makes it very accessible to viewers whose German isn't so fluent.

An introverted insurance executive at a car rental service is annoyed by his hyperactive, garrulous coworker, but the two end up becoming friends.
