地球連邦大学のサイモン教授は、太陽で起きている核融合の異常増進に気づく。このまま進行すれば、1年以内に地球は灼熱地獄となり人類は滅亡し、3年後には、超新星爆発を起こして太陽系自体が消滅する。観測データと導きだされた結論を地球の危機として警告を発するが、地球連邦政府は事態の深刻さを理解するどころか、サイモン教授を大学から解雇する。
ただ、地球防衛軍司令長官藤堂平九郎は、サイモン教授の警告を重く受けて止めていた。最悪の事態に備え、ヤマトを第2の地球探しの特務艦として、銀河系中心方向に派遣することを決定。長く艦長代理を務めてきた古代進を正式に新艦長として任命。補佐役として島大介及び真田志郎を副長に任命。また、土門竜介、揚羽武ら新人乗組員を乗船させ出航準備を進めさせる。暁の日本アルプスの雪原から、ヤマトは人類が移住可能な惑星探索に旅立つ。

西暦2200年。銀河文明と交わった地球人は多様な宇宙人との間に「亜人（サブ・ヒューマン）」と呼ばれるハーフを芽生えさせていた。そんな中、銀河系で唯一の機械文明を有すると判明した地球人は自分のみが文明人と奢（おご）り、他の宇宙人や亜人を蛮族として蔑視していた。だが地球人に蔑まれる亜人の青年ゼロは、実は古代銀河を支配していた魔神の末裔だった。己の素性を知ったゼロは宇宙の支配者という宿命を自覚。強大な銀河帝国マンジタラとの戦いの道を歩むのだった。
100分のOVAを先行して劇場公開したアニメ映画。原作の壮大な物語世界を映像化すべく、当初はアニメ版も連作として製作される予定だった（初期には『亜人戦士1』の題名で雑誌などに紹介された）が、単発に終わった。

交易商人の父ニコロと叔父マテオによって、半ば強引にシルクロードの旅に出ることになったベネチアの少年マルコ・ポーロ。彼は初めて見る砂漠の風土や異国の環境の中で数々の経験を積み、心身ともに逞しく成長していく。やがて元の国に着いた20歳のマルコは、当時の王＝大ハーン・フビライの信頼を獲得。彼の勅命で元の国各地の視察を命じられた。マルコの旅はまだまだ続く。
番組内容はセルアニメーション形式で語られるマルコの伝記ドラマが主体だが、そこに番組スタッフが各挿話に関連する現地で取材した実写フィルムを挿入。旅のロマンと異国の知識を啓蒙させる、異色のアニメ＋実写番組となった。小椋桂による、上質な主題歌や挿入歌の数々も印象深い。

1981年上映的30分钟剧场动画、与《夏への扉》同时上映。
『カリフォルニア物語』等で知られる吉田秋生の短篇マンガを原作につくられたアニメーション映画で、併映作品は『夏への扉』であった。いまは亡き「ミドリヤ渋谷店」（現THE PRIME渋谷プライム館）を皮切りに、全国約200か所でホール上映公開された。
サウンドトラックを近田春夫がプロデュースしたことで知られ、編曲と演奏を近田春夫&ビブラトーンズ（のちのビブラトーンズ）の前身、「人種熱＋近田春夫」がおこなった。また主題歌には『うれしい体験』（1975年）の青木美冴、挿入歌に近田が手がけた人気バンド・ジューシィ・フルーツを起用した。
オリジナルサウンドトラックは、LPレコード『「悪魔と姫ぎみ」オリジナル・サウンド・トラック』は、映画の公開の5日後にリリースされた。
