本片是改编自《沉默的羔羊》原作者汤马士哈里斯的一本畅销小说《Red Dragon》。本片亦是《沉默的羔羊》的前传，故事讲述一位精神病和FBI顾问双重矛盾身份的人物 - 汉尼拔雷克特医生，又称「食人医生」。这位正邪并容一体的食人医生拥有超凡智商和高格调艺文品味，与一位拥有辨识变态心智特异功能的联邦探员展开一场斗智斗力的追逐战。
