فرودو و سام به حرکت خود در سرزمین موردور به سمت کوه هلاکت ادامه می‌دهند. در آن سوی کوه های موردور بزرگ ترین جنگ دوران سوم، نبرد حلقه آغاز می شود. نبردی که هر چند فقط متوجه شهر «میناس تیریث» است، اما نتیجه اش تمام خطّه ی میانه را تحت تأثیر قرار می دهد. پیروزی یا شکست نیروهای تاریکی، به موفقیت یا عدم موفقیت فرودو و سام وابسته است.

“精灵宝钻”是意译，最早出现于2002年由邓嘉宛翻译，联经出版社出版的译本中。“Silmarillion”在昆雅语中是“茜玛丽尔（Silmaril）”的复数所有格，故原标题可理解为“关于众茜玛丽尔的故事”。其中茜玛丽尔是指诺多族的王子费诺以物质茜丽玛（Silima）所打造出的宝石名字，在昆雅语中意为“纯净光芒的光辉”。因此，“精灵宝钻”是一个恰当而不失文雅的译名，在国内也常以“精灵宝钻”称呼“茜玛丽尔”。
