看板屋レインボー・アート社の親爺大作は、南条という男が居眠り運転する車にはねられて死んだ。雇人の定夫が後をついでペンキ屋を続けることになった。大作の娘のミヨ、ボーイの三平たちも賛成した。極東観光の事故係が、三万円で示談にしようとやってきた。定夫は憤然とし、極東観光へ怒鳴りこんだ。社長が南条だった。定夫は百万円貰って帰ってきた。レインボー社に井関という弁護士が現われた。井関は淡路の松平家の家臣で、先代のかくし子である定夫を探してきたのだ。定夫は淡路へ渡った。定夫は井関の娘和子に案内して貰った。定夫の義理の弟がダムで溺死したという話に疑念を持った。その頃、南条が秘書の由紀を連れて淡路へ来た。南条はここでキャーバレーを経営していた。さらに松平家の所有する旅館、牧場の買収を図っていた。これには、松平家の相談役溝口が一役買っていた。定夫が若い人のためのユースホテルを作った。開店披露会には、由紀も呼ばれていた。由紀は祖母郁代の知人であった。ホテルの地下室では、南条の子分たちがある装置を仕掛けていた。火事が起った。定夫は南条一味を撃退した。溝口は罪を悔い、由紀が定夫の実の母であることを話すのだった－－。

The film depicts how the work to build the Great Buddha overcame a number of obstacles as proponents and opponents clashed over the construction of the Buddha. This work is based on a play by Hideo Osada, which was performed by the Shin Kyodo Theater Company in 1940.

Everyone knows Kaneto Shindo from his horror classics 'Kuroneko' and 'Onibaba' and although they're both undoubtedly great films, I've been more impressed by his lesser-known works, like 'Wolf' and 'Human' and now, 'A Scoundrel,' which could be the greatest of the lot. Set in the war-torn 14th century, the film concerns the governor of a province whose chamberlain (the phenomenal Nobuko Otowa, Shindo's wife) tells him of a woman she knew in the Royal court whose beauty could tear a nation apart. The foreshadowing is not so subtle. 'A Scoundrel' was co-written by Shindo and Japan's beloved Junichiro Tanizaki (an author who has not impressed me much, although I've only read very little), and is at once humorous, suspenseful, gruesome, and absolutely fascinating.

真犯人が何の罪にも問われていないことに激怒した国子は、正体を偽って柿沼家に家政婦として入りこみ、柿沼夫妻の一人息子で、死んだ武と同じ５歳の健一を殺すことで復讐を果たそうとするのだが。
