Dystopian Dream [Music] Douban
Nitin Sawhney genre: Electronic
release date 2015-11-06 publisher: Positiv-ID
His first new studio album in four years and also his tenth, Dystopian Dream brings together the full breadth of Sawhney’s 360 degree global panorama in his strongest and most refreshing affirmation to date.
A distinct departure from Sawhney’s previous 9 studio albums, Dystopian Dream focuses on Sawhney’s familiar motifs of personal identity and swooping world-views, but this time driven by more cathartic themes of loss, isolation, surrender and perseverance. Featuring a bluesier, darker, more contemporary influence, the album is a modern homage to Massive Attack’s classic “Protection” album in its eclecticism and production values.
Besides the customary virtuosic instrumentals, this is a true singer’s album, featuring a blistering blues-rock earth-shaker on first single ‘When I’m Gone’ with powerful young vocalist Stealth, a hypnotically husky performance from teenage newcomer J’Danna, “BBC Introducing” graduate, Eva Stone, and a drum ‘n’ bass turn from Joss Stone. Virtually all of Sawhney’s acclaimed band and singers also feature, fresh from this year’s televised performance at the Latitude Festival and last year’s sell out show at The Royal Albert Hall.
A gut-wrenching bird’s eye perspective on world events distilled into a personal epiphany, Dystopian Dream origins lie in the loss of Sawhney’s father in 2013 and the deaths of several friends and mentors. Says Sawhney, “I became increasingly disillusioned with the hypocritical world of politics, with immigrants (like my parents) once more being scapegoated and austerity measures being used to bludgeon the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society. I found these feelings of despair about political and social injustices being blamed on immigrants were being amplified constantly in the news.”

Water [Music] Douban
Hélène Grimaud / Nitin Sawhney genre: Classical
release date 2016-01-29 publisher: DG
Hélène Grimaud’s latest album for Deutsche Grammophon, produced by Nitin Sawhney, was inspired by her abiding fascination with Nature’s most precious gift. Water is set for worldwide release on February 5, 2016 and conveys imaginative responses to everything from mighty oceans and great lakes to raindrops and snowflakes as well as inviting listeners to contemplate the mounting threats to the safety, security and supply of this essential resource.
Helene Grimaud - Water“What inspired the idea to record this album is really the fascination that so many composers of the 19th and 20th centuries seem to have had with the element of water,” Grimaud states. Not only did this sow the seed for a recording, it also grew into a collaboration between the pianist and Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon. Their site-specific installation tears become… streams become… was created for the Wade Thompson Drill Hall at New York’s Park Avenue Armory in December 2014. Described by the New York Times as a “compelling, boldly original work”, the project blended elements of art, music and architecture, with Grimaud’s water-themed programme located at its core. Gordon transformed the cavernous Drill Hall by slowly flooding its vast floor to create the impression of what he described as an endless “field of water,” entirely surrounding the grand piano at which Grimaud performed.
The album features works by nine composers: it opens with Berio’s Wasserklavier and includes Takemitsu’s Rain Tree Sketch II, Fauré’s Barcarolle No.5, Ravel’s Jeux d’eau, “Almería” from Albéniz’s Iberia, Liszt’s Les Jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este and the first movement of Janáček’s In the Mists, before closing with Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie. These myriad reflections on the qualities of water were recorded live at the Armory during the installation and then connected and woven into the album narrative by seven “Transitions” that were newly composed, recorded and produced by Sawhney. Grimaud was delighted to work with the award-winning composer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, praising his ability to highlight “the universal human dependence on our planet’s most precious resource” and weave “contrasting poetic and philosophical perspectives into a single, cogent musical ecosystem.”
Each piece on this new album unfolds as part of an acoustic “stream”, carefully structured in its blend of classical and contemporary compositions, yet experimental in its overall aesthetic.
Hélène Grimaud is not only one of the world’s most celebrated pianists, but also a tireless champion of ecological causes, having founded the Wolf Conservation Center, which raises awareness of the importance and relationship of these top predators to our ecosystem. With Water, the insightful Grimaud has united her twin passions for music and the environment in unique fashion.

Beyond Skin [Music] MusicBrainz Douban Eggplant.place
8.4 (10 ratings) Nitin Sawhney genre: Electronic / drum n bass / ethnic techno / fusion / downtempo
release date 1999-09-13 publisher: Outcaste
Nitin Sawhney's Beyond Skin works on at least two levels. First, it's a plea against racism and war, relating, as Sawhney writes in the liner notes, that one's identity is defined only by oneself — that identity is "beyond skin." Second, the music is an extremely accomplished blend of classical, drum'n'bass, jazz, hip-hop, and Indian elements. The album's political statements are seen most clearly in the samples imbedded in the beginning and ending of most tracks. Dealing with nuclear testing and identity, the samples are effective in setting the tone for the songs. The music is quite lush, featuring among other instruments, tablas, pianos, and cellos to equally beautiful effect. The production brings a crystal-clear polish to nearly every element in the mix, whether it's the passionate, intense vocals of the Rizwan Qawwali Group on "Homelands" or the stunning, impossibly gorgeous voice of Swati Natekar on "Nadia." The entire album is bathed in eclectic touches which never fail to maintain a poetic, accessible sense of charm and wonder. Rarely has electronic music been crafted with as much substance and style as it has on Beyond Skin. Sawhney travels back and forth between genres quite effortlessly. "Nadia" is as good a drum'n'bass track as one is likely to find. "Letting Go" suggests the coffee-table trip-pop of Morcheeba's Big Calm. "The Pilgrim" is moody, soul-searching hip-hop aided by the wiry vocals of Spek. "Tides" is an excellent, breezy jazz number suggesting Vince Guaraladi in his finest, most experimental moments. "Nostalgia" sounds like a more-relaxed Lamb. "The Conference" is a treat, featuring incredible vocal interplay that simply must be heard to be believed. "Beyond Skin," which opens and closes with a sample of Edward Murrow reading the poem "Now I'm become death," is a powerful conclusion to Sawhney's pacifistic vision. Accessible, frightening, emotional, and most-of-all accomplished, Sawhney's Beyond Skin is a remarkable album of rewarding, organic music.
