1979年，法国电子音乐家雅尔接到联合国教科文组织的通知，中国政府想邀请他前往北京举办专场音乐会。1981年10月雅尔和其妻子——当时在欧洲已享有盛誉的电影明星夏洛特·兰普林抵达中国，分别在北京和上海举办了电子音乐会，成为改革开放后第一个在中国举办大型演出的西方人。
当时随行的工作团队成员多达七十余人，演出设备直接从法国空运至中国，为了解决当时演出需要的电力问题，北京城的路灯停了两晚。他一共在北京表演两场，上海表演三场，现场聆听他演奏的观众超过21万人，经过电视台和电台的现场转播共有五亿人次收听他的这次中国巡演。
