来自异次元的种族MU占领了东京，并将城市隐藏在巨大的防护壁之后，他们欺骗在东京生活的人们他们已经成为世界上仅存的人类。在防护壁之外，名为“TERRA”的反MU组织声势渐渐壮大。某日，在同MU激烈交火之时，一位名为神名绫人（下野紘 配音）的平凡少年意外的来到了位于东京湾的地下神殿之中，在这里，绫人见到了巨型机器人“Rahxephon”，并且成为了它的驾驶者。
在神秘女子的紫东遥（久川绫 配音）的带领下，绫人来到了防护壁之外，加入了TERRA，并且在那里遇见了名为如月久远（桑岛法子 配音）的女子。MU组织对TERRA发起了进攻，当TERRA的存亡陷入危机之中时，绫人再一次驾驶着Rahxephon，成为了这个组织的救世主。

对Pailsen留下的秘密文件志在必得的沃卡姆，目的在于对“异能生存体”的有用性进行实验，从而在战后得到地位。
于是在沃卡姆监视下的基利可，和被秘密文件挑选出的四人：巴可夫、哥登、扎奇、可恰克一起，不停地转战在过于残酷的战场上。“如果不是异能力，就没有生存的机会。”……

原作は斎藤惇夫の『冒険者たち～ガンバと十五匹の仲間』。言わば名作児童文学作品だが、チーフディレクター出崎統によって、他社の名作路線とは一線を画する味わいの仕上がりになっている。
出崎監督は以後『家なき子』（77年）『宝島』（78年）と児童名作作品を続けざまに手掛けるが、３作品共通して描かれるのは少年の旅と成長であり、演出も硬派、スピーディ、スリリングなものだった。『ガンバ』はその第一作に位置する作品である。
アニメ化にあたっては、メインキャラクターを７匹に絞るとともに、オリジナルエピソードを多量に挿入している（第３話から第17話まではアニメのオリジナル）。これによって、ノロイとの戦いが中心だった原作と比べ、ガンバたちの冒険の旅が存分に描かれ、キャラクターの魅力も最大限に描き切ることができた。
作画監督は椛島義夫、各話演出は出崎氏の他に御厨恭輔、竹内啓雄、吉田茂承らが担当したが、全話を芝山努による画面レイアウトで統一感をはかった、テレビアニメとしては画期的なシステムが取られていた。
原画は近藤喜文、川尻善昭、金沢比呂司らが担当、エンディングは近藤喜文の作画によるものである。また、小林七郎による美術は、冒険の背景にふさわしいラフでワイルドなタッチを駆使しつつ、“ネズミの目線”という難問題も見事にクリアしている。出崎・小林コンビによる止め絵からイラストに移行するハーモニーの手法も、この作品の雰囲気作りに一役買っている。
声優では、ガンバ役の野沢雅子が、陽気でアグレッシブな中に素直な感受性を表現して出色の出来。また、ノロイ役の大塚周夫が、ノロイの不気味なカリスマ性を怪演している。
84年（Ｓ59年）、再編集されて『冒険者たち～ガンバと７匹のなかま～』として劇場版が製作された。こちらはノロイとの戦いをメインとしている点で原作に近い仕上がりとなっている。
