The fever fly Dilophus febrilis (Bibionidae) prefers forest edges and hedgerow habitats in Europe; here visiting Solidago gigantea (Asteraceae) in Berlin in September. S. Falk & J. McCulloch (2025) sequenced the species as part of the Darwin Tree of Life Consortium. The genome comprises 305.60 megabases, mostly scaffolded into 6 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The tree of Life project contributes to our advanced knowledge about our biodiversity and their phylogenetic relationships. Biodiversity research is for example an important aspect of climate research.

St Francis Bay. Never seen so many snakes in one place as I did on that farm. This is a juvenile Skaarpsteker . Name means Sheep Striker , got that name as farmers years ago believed the these small snakes killed sheep! Back fanged and a mild venom which has NO effect on humans.

Chimaphila maculata (spotted wintergreen, also called striped wintergreen, striped prince's pine (not princess pine; that's a clubmoss), spotted pipsissewa, ratsbane, or rheumatism root) growing along the Pierce Road in Harvard Forest. According to Wikipedia, "native Americans used its leaf tea to treat rheumatism and stomach problems, and crushed leaves were applied as a poultice to sores and wounds."

Sarracenia rubra has been putting out some decent pitchers in the latter part of the summer. This is subspecies wherryi, named after botanist Edgar T. Wherry, who did a lot of work on various species of Sarracenia. Native to restricted parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, it is also known as Wherry's sweet pitcher plant.

Found on the ground right after a heavy rainstorm: A close-up look at a Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) 🌧️🐝

The distinct black "anchor" mark on its yellow face shield is its key identification feature. It’s fascinating to see all the tiny raindrops clinging to its fine hair!

Crop of a macro photo of a spider (any suggestions on which one?) hiding on a horse chestnut husk covered in white Lachnum fruiting bodies. These tiny (some are less than 1mm2 big) fungi are cup-shaped and have hairy fringes around the edges of their caps. The spider is black, also hairy and is about as tall as the spikes on the husk. Made by stacking about 200 pictures.

Skaapsteeker Snake. The name is Afrikaans and translated is Sheep Sticket, as farmers believed the bit and killed sheep! They do have venom but so mild it has NO effect on humans, is back fanged and could not bite sheep very easily any how.
