You can trust Alastair Reynolds to weave a galaxy spanning whodunit. The classic elements are all here: it's a space opera, with relativistic interstellar travel, intriguing post-human societies, AI, even a space chase makes an appearance. And then there's the fact it's a standalone novel: every detail fits neatly, all the mysteries intertwine and build up on each other. And all are answered by the end, making it a really satisfying whole.

When I read this book, it felt like a classic fairytale turned feminist - told from the POV of an old white man. Tress develops a lot as a character in this book, sometimes a bit on the nose. The 'one true love' trope bothered me from beginning to end, but that's also a personal ick.
What really carries this book for me, is the worldbuilding. How Tress explores and discovers the world and herself along with it is what makes this book a great read. If you want to read a magical coming of age book, this might be a good fit!
