Wants to read Miss MacIntosh, My Darling

Rated Missy Series 4: Bad Influence 9/10

Another great set of Missy adventures.

Rated Montana Noir 10/10
Even though there were a few stories that I didn't love every bit of, and one I just didn't like (Downtown Billings, looking at you, but maybe I'm missing something), I still LOVED this collection. It is such a RELIEF to read a book that really makes an effort to get Montana right. Sure we have cowboys and all that, but we're just as varied here as many other places. It's hard to pick a favorite, but maybe Debra Magpie Earling's Polson-set story is it. The pacing, the details, all of it: perfection.

Other highlights include David Abrams, Caroline Patterson, Eric Heidle, Keir Graff, Jamie Ford, and Janet Skeslien Charles' stories. Also, if you get a chance to see Yvonne Seng read aloud, do so, because that woman's voice is magnificent.

Full disclosure: I do know some of the authors personally, but we're a state of only a million people. It would be weird if I didn't.

Rated Missy: Series 1 10/10
When I originally reviewed these stories, they were all separated in the Goodreads system, so I had 4 different ratings, but I'll rate it here again: If loved Missy on the show, you'll also love this. And the second audio collection. And whatever more are hopefully coming.
Wants to read Museum of the Americas
Rated My Scotland 8/10

Last year, I read a lot of Val McDermid books (mostly the Karen Pirie series, but a few of the others too), so getting a used copy of this behind-the-scenes look at various locations she has used as inspiration for her books was interesting. The photos are great, and the book ends with a short story taking place on the Isle of Jura, and it's a good one. If you come across this and like her mysteries, it's worth reading.

Rated My Dead Dad Was in ZZ Top: 100% Real*, Never-Before-Seen Documents from the World of Rock and Roll 8/10
This is a funny, quick-read book that probably does better with readers who are familiar with the musicians referenced throughout. One does not need in-depth knowledge, but having spent time listening to both classic rock radio and the first incarnation of MTV’s 120 Minutes certainly helps. There are not a lot of music books that reference Yo La Tengo, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and The Butthole Surfers within such a short collection of pages.

Glaser’s previous writing credits include Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Saturday Night Live, and like those shows, not every joke is hilarious, but there were certainly enough to keep me reading. He rides the line between stupid-funny and witty-funny well, and it would be a good book to give to a music-loving friend with a sense of humor. Is it anything groundbreaking? Perhaps not, but I still really enjoyed reading it.

(Full review appears on Glorified Love Letters.)

Rated Mountainfit: Fjällsommar, Fjällsjälv 8/10
Sethi's book is a beautiful meditation on her travels to Sweden, where she assisted in the tracking of various species of birds. While I'm not much of a nature-book reader, nor do I particularly know anything about birds, I really enjoyed Mountainfit. Sethi's openhearted enthusiasm for what she learns and encounters is contagious, and the way she writes is closer to poetry than journalism.

Sethi wrote a guest post for my site about the Swedish coffee break called fika, and also gave a recipe for a cinnamon roll-esque recipe, kanelbullar. Check it out here.
Rated Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye 8/10
This is a really good middle grade book that both myself AND my 9-yr-old son enjoyed a lot. (And the e-ARC I had didn't even have the finished illustrations yet.)
