Rated The Gene: An Intimate History 8/10
book
Rated The Poppy War 10/10
This book goes from no fantasy, to a sprinkle of fantasy, to full metal jacket fantasy. And it does so, so gradually that it is irresistible.
Very well written too.
Rated Wondermond 8/10
A fun read about a community in a region that the rest of the country looks down on. An interesting historical angle which illustrates how poverty of past days keeps on having its effect deep into the future.
Rated The Drowning Faith 10/10
This confirmed a few things that I expected for a while (and they were hinted at as well). In a few pages even more depth is given to already very intriguing and intricate characters.
Rated De genadestoel 8/10
Hard to put down. The story kept on finding new levels of darkness and insanity. Pretty much to the point where I started wondering if I would get nightmares from the story.
There was a nice little twist after the main story had come to its conclusion.
Rated The Storm We Made 8/10
Very interesting to read about WWII in SE-Asia from the perspective of Malaysians. Although there is plenty of sadness in the book, it still reads effortless.
Rated Vonkie 10/10
A wonderful story about aging, loss and above all that at every age there is something to be gained from life. All wrapped up in a journey on foot through the Scottish highlands.
Rated The Burning God 10/10
It is quite extraordinary how the pace and action managed to continuously keep rising throughout this entire trilogy. And what a fitting end to it. I always knew it wasn’t really going to be a happy end, and this was nicely done by the author.
The story of this trilogy and its characters are going to stay with me for a while to come.
Rated Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity's Most Pressing Needs 8/10
Rated The Dragon Republic 10/10
Another whirlwind week of events in this one. The world that the author creates feels real and intricate. Keen to find out where the 3rd book takes this.
Hard to put down.
Rated Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster 10/10
I knew I was going to rate this book very highly. I knew a fair bit of the 1996 Everest disaster before reading this. Even though I’ve never done any mountaineering, this book has made me think about it a lot during the days I was reading it. I also watched a lot of YT videos about mountaineering and ascents/descents of various of the tallest peaks.
Doing a proper trek - not climbing anything tall - in Nepal/Pakistan has become a stronger urge.
Rated Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself 10/10
