Rated Tooth and Nail: A Steampunk Sleeping Beauty 6/10
Fast-paced YA steampunk pulp that mixes classic fairy tales with vampires, gargoyles, and other traditional lore. Holy smoke, what a lot of pages!<br/><br/>An incredibly detailed deep dive into the early days of Microsoft Office development and Windows Visa through 8. If you're into this sort of information, Steven provides a lot of information that you've probably never read before. Rated Fugitive Telemetry 6/10
All Murderbot books are relatively short, and this one is a novella rather than a full novel. I don't mind, as any story about a rogue security robot figuring out its place among humans is fun.<br/><br/>I didn’t enjoy this one as much as previous entries, though. The self-narration around feelings and TV shows feels repetitive by now, especially in such a short book. A fun coming of age story with interesting world building, and a plot that develops at a good pace. The characters are interesting, although they are (especially early on) a bit flat. I don't mind it too much, as it makes this an easy read.<br/><br/>What I minded more was the overly present romance plot (expected in this genre) and the very explicit sex chapters. Those parts were not my cup of tea. I loved the build-up of the Tarot trilogy and found myself caught in this final book of Finn's story arc as much as in the first two installments. After defeating the demon king, Finn becomes the new ruler, and... well ok, maybe things don't end happily ever after, because there's still a game to be played.<br/><br/>I had somewhat hoped for a less shallow conclusion - either something either where Finn discovered he didn't need to 'revive' his late wife as he'd discovered his purpose in helping and collaborating with others around him, or maybe how (since his wife had been the initial model for what became the game's AI) he found enough of her in the game to bring closure to his longing. The simpler, more direct ending is satisfactory, but doesn't bring it to 5 star territory.
Rated Young Bucks: Killing the Business from Backyards to the Big Leagues 8/10
I had a bit of trouble getting into some of the first quarter (I'm not sure why), but was pretty much hooked after that. It's a fascinating tale of working hard, believing in yourself, and hustling to make ends meet. I thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series, and by now consider these Awaken Online side quest books a must-read as they deepen out the character arcs and provide immersive side stories.<br/><br/>The repeated “sickening pop” that I complained about in my review of book #4 hardly occurs in this book, so yay for that too. This is the fourth book in the series about dragons in the army in Napoleonic times. The main story and side stories progress nicely, but I found this episode slower going and the world-building less inspiring than the previous one. Still, I look forward to finding out what happensto commander Laurence and Temeraire in book 5.
